SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior outside hitter Mindy Stanislovaitis notched 10 kills to lead the Orange to a 3-0 sweep of Buffalo (6-2) in the home opener on Tuesday night at the Women's Building. With the win, Syracuse improved to 8-0 on the season, marking the best start since 2004 when the team opened at 9-0 before being dealt its first loss. Stanislovaitis was one of six Syracuse student-athletes to tally at least two kills through the three set match. Junior outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre was second on the team with nine kills, 10 digs and three total blocks while senior outside hitter Hayley Todd had eight kills while hitting a blistering .480. Freshman middle blocker Lindsay McCabe chipped in six kills while sophomore Samantha Hinz had four kills, four digs and four total blocks. Sophomore setter Laura Homann directed the balanced offense, dishing out 33 assists while adding six digs and a pair of kills.
Defensively, Lefebvre and junior Ashley Williams set the tone with 10 digs apiece while sophomore defensive specialist Zoe Guzman added eight.
The first set was the most closely contended of the three, Syracuse kept a steady lead through the majority of the match, building its buffer to five, 18-23, before Buffalo surged back, tying the score at 23. The Orange held off the charging Bulls to secure its final two points and take the match, 26-24.
SU carried its momentum from the first set victory through the match, posting 25-21 wins in both the second and third sets to complete the sweep, 3-0.
The Orange looks to extend its undefeated streak when heads to the Bronx, N.Y. for the two-day, four-match Fordham Tournament, beginning Friday, September 10 at 2 p.m.
