Syracuse University head football coach Doug Marrone and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner will celebrate the Orange's victory in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl during a halftime ceremony at SU's men's basketball game against Cincinnati on Saturday, January 15 in the Carrier Dome (12:00 p.m., BIG EAST Network). Syracuse's 36-34 win against Kansas State gave Miner a victory in the 'Mayor's Bet' with Manhattan, Kan., Mayor Bruce Snead.
“The mayor's belief in our football program is appreciated, and we know her attitude represents the feelings of the community about our wonderful head coach, Doug Marrone, who has done an amazing job creating a successful culture of football at SU,” said Syracuse Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross.
Miner will give the winnings, which includes three slabs of hickory-smoked ribs from Cox Brothers BBQ and three different beers from Tallgrass Brewing Company, to employees in the Department of Public Works. Syracuse Department of Public Works Commissioner Pete O'Connor and Superintendant of Street Cleaning and Snow and Ice Kip Culkin will accept the winnings on the Department's behalf at halftime.
“I had no doubt New York's college team would be victorious in the Pinstripe Bowl,” Miner said. “I am proud to present my winnings from Mayor Snead to the best snowfighters in the country. They keep our City moving and working even when it seems like the snow will never stop falling.”
All fans attending the basketball game are invited to have their picture taken with the New Era Pinstripe Bowl trophy prior to the game in the Aspen Dental booth in the backcourt in the Carrier Dome. The trophy will be on display beginning 90 minutes before tipoff.
Marrone led his team to an 8-5 record in his second season as head coach at his alma mater. The team begins Spring practice on March 8 and will have its annual Spring game on April 16 in the Carrier Dome. The 2011 schedule features home BIG EAST Conference games against Cincinnati, Rutgers, South Florida and West Virginia, and non-league games against Wake Forest, Rhode Island, Toledo.
