SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Jenna Caira (Toronto, Ontario) of the Orange softball squad and junior Scoop Jardine (Philadelphia, Pa.) of the men's basketball team are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 17, 2011.
Caira is the top returning pitcher for the Syracuse softball squad. She went 19-12 in the circle in 2010, throwing 259 strikeouts in 191.0 innings of work while leading the Orange to the 2010 BIG EAST Championship title. An All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree, Caira earned BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player honors before rejoining the pitching staff of the Canadian National Team for a second season.
Caira, a physical education major, and the Orange hosted more than 100 participants in their annual winter clinic on Jan. 16 and open preseason practice today.
Jardine has started all 18 games for the undefeated Orange this season, ranking second on the team with a 13.7 points per game average. One of 20 finalists for the 2011 Bob Cousy Award, Jardine ranks second in the BIG EAST and 12th nationally with 6.1 assists per game while his 1.7 steals per game and 2.1 assist/turnover ratio ranks eighth and ninth in conference, respectively.
Jardine, a child and family studies major, and the Orange visit Pittsburgh for a top-five clash today before hosting Villanova on Saturday, January 20 at noon in the Carrier Dome.
