Third-year head coach Doug Marrone and the Syracuse football team set a clear goal for the 2011 season- to compete for a BIG EAST Championship. Now at the midway point of the season, the Orange (4-2) faces a challenging stretch of conference games during the next six weeks as SU looks to reach its expectations.
Syracuse came out of the gates with two tough wins at the Carrier Dome against Wake Forest (36-29, OT) and Rhode Island (21-14). Against the Demon Deacons, the Orange erased a 15-point fourth quarter deficit before sealing the win in overtime.
After suffering a 38-17 setback at Southern California, SU returned to the Dome against Toledo, and overcame yet another deficit to beat the Rockets in overtime, 33-30. The Orange opened conference play with a 19-16 double overtime loss at the hands of Rutgers before traveling to Tulane to defeat the Green Wave on a last-second field goal by Ross Krautman.
Leading the charge for the offense this season has been five-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection Ryan Nassib. The West Chester, Pa. native has thrown for 1294 yards on 124-of-192 passing and 11 touchdowns. He has also orchestrated four game-winning drives, and has the highest completion percentage in the BIG EAST (64.6%).
While Nassib has spread the ball around the field this season, with 11 different players recording at least one catch, Nassib's primary target has been junior wide receiver Alec Lemon. Lemon has 31 catches for 322 yards and three touchdowns. Joining Lemon is tight end Nick Provo and receiver Van Chew, who has 22 and 20 receptions this season, respectively.
Senior running back Antwon Bailey is having a career year in the backfield this season for SU. Bailey has rushed for 553 and five touchdowns, including four 100-yard games. In 2011, Bailey has set her single-game career-highs in rushing attempts, rushing touchdowns and receptions. Bailey is also one-yard shy of tying his career-high for rushing yards in a season.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior free safety Phillip Thomas leads the squad with 46 tackles and a team-high three interceptions. Trailing closely behind is senior linebacker Dan Vaughan with 41 tackles. Vaughan registered a career-high 15 tackles two weeks ago against Rutgers, becoming the first SU player since Arthur Jones in 2008 to record 15 tackles in a game.
While the defense entered the 2011 campaign with only five returning starters, this season's newcomers have quickly acclimated themselves to SU style of play. Freshmen linebacker Dyshawn Davis has 25 tackles for the Orange, including a team-high 7.0 for a loss of yards and 4.0 sacks. He is one sack away from tying the SU freshman sacks record, currently held by linebackers coach Dan Conley.
The defensive corps was forced to step up early on after senior defensive end Chandler Jones was sidelined with an injury for five of the first six games. Jones, who returned to practice last week, was replaced by senior Torrey Ball, who has 17 tackles including 2.5 for a loss of yards.
Sophomore placekicker Ross Krautman has kicked two game-winning field goals for the Orange in 2011, and currently sits ninth on SU's all-time made field goals list (27). Krautman, who was named the BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday, is tied for 23rd in the nation with 1.5 field goals made per game.
After the bye week, the Orange will return to the Carrier Dome to host BIG EAST foe West Virginia on October 21 (8:00 p.m., ESPN or ESPN2). Tickets are available for the game online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) and by phone (888-DOMETIX).
