With the Orange at the midway point of the season, Phil Steele has released his Midseason All-BIG EAST Team. Phil Steele's College Football Preview, one of the nation's most informative preseason football magazines, revealed that senior tight end Nick Provo and junior free safety Phillip Thomas are two of nine SU players named to his midseason squads. Provo and Thomas are members of the Offensive and Defensive First Teams, respectively.
Senior running back Antwon Bailey, junior wide receiver Alec Lemon, junior offensive tackle Justin Pugh and freshman linebacker Dyshawn Davis were named to the Second Team, while redshirt senior offensive guard Andrew Tiller, senior defensive tackle Deon Goggins, senior linebacker Dan Vaughan and sophomore placekicker Ross Krautman were named to the third team.
Provo is second on the team this season with 22 receptions for 265 and two touchdowns. The West Palm Beach, Fla. native is second on SU's record list for both career receiving yards by a tight end (755) and career receptions by a tight end (63). He has an active streak of 19 consecutive games with a catch, tying him for sixth all-time at Syracuse with teammate Van Chew.
Thomas currently sits 14th on SU's all-time record list for tackles by a defensive back (167). He is seventh in the BIG EAST and leads an Orange defense with 7.7 tackles/game (46 total). With three interceptions on the season, he is tied for 17th in the nation with 0.5 picks per game. The Miami, Fla. native was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week following his two interception day against Rhode Island in the second week of the season. Thomas was also named a Honorable Mention All-American.
Bailey (Landover, Md.) is one of two BIG EAST running back with four 100-yard rushing games in 2011. His three straight games with 100+ yards and a rushing touchdown is the fifth longest active streak in the nation. With the help of Pugh (Holland, Pa.) and Tiller (Brentwood, N.Y.), Bailey has rushed for 553 yards on the ground on 124 carries and five touchdowns.
Lemon became the 17th Syracuse receiver to reach 1,000 career receiving yards last weekend at Tulane. A resident of Crofton, Md., Lemon leads the team in catches (31) and yards (322). He ranks sixth in the BIG EAST with 5.7 receptions per game and seventh with 53.7 receiving yards per game. Lemon has also thrown a touchdown pass this season, a 28-yard strike to Chew which is nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year.
Davis (Woodbury, N.J.) has four sacks through the first six games of the season, which is tied for third on SU's freshman sacks record list. He is tied for 37th in the nation with 0.67 sacks per game and is part of an Orange defense that ranks 29th in the nation with 7.17 tackles for loss per game. One of Davis' seven TFL's this season came against Rutgers, when he hit Jawan Jamison in the backfield, forcing a fumble that was ultimately returned 66-yards for an SU touchdown. The play was also nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year.
Goggins, who is in his first-year as a starter, has 30 tackles this season, including five for a loss of yards. The Norwalk, Calif. native's five TFL's ranks 16th in the BIG EAST and is part of a defense that ranks 24th in the nation in rush defense (104.3 yard allowed/game).
Vaughan (Gibosnia, Pa.) is second on the team with 41 tackles in 2011 as the team's strong side linebacker. Vaughan had a career day against Rutgers in SU's BIG EAST opener when he registered 15 tackles, becoming the first Orange defender since Arthur Jones in 2008 to record 15 tackles.
Krautman (Franklin Lakes, Va.), this week's BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week, has kicked two game-winning field goals for the Orange this season. He is ninth on SU's all-time made field goals list with 27 and 12th on the career PAT list (47). Krautman is 9-of-12 on field goals this season for the Orange and 17-of-18 on PATs.
