In the final race before next weekend's BIG EAST Championship in Louisville, the Syracuse cross country team competed at the John Reif Memorial in Ithaca, N.Y. Reed Kamyszek led the men's harriers with a second place finish in the five-mile run, while Erin Cawley paced the Orange women with a fourth place finish in the 5,000 meters.
"Young people on both the men's and women's teams ran well," head coach Chris Fox said. "It bodes well for the future of Syracuse cross country."
Kamyszek's time of 26:48.80 set the tone for the men's team, which placed five runners in the top ten. Patrick Geoghegan crossed the finish in fifth place (27:03), closely followed by Jon Squeri (seventh; 27:12.10) and Jonathan Aziz (eighth; 27:12.10). David Wilson also ran for SU, finishing in 10th place with a time of 27:29.90.
Cawley (19:19.70) was tightly contested by teammate Lauryn MacFawn in fifth place at 19:24.70. Freshman Katie Weisenburger closed out the SU harriers in the top ten at 20:00.10. Also running for the women's squad was Brenna Symoniak (12th; 20:04.30) and Kate Norskog (23rd; 21:12).
The SU men will look to defend their 2009 and 2010 BIG EAST Championship next weekend in Louisville, while the women's squad will look to build off last season's third-place finish.
