LOUISVILLE, KY -- Louisville's (4-4, 2-1) defense held Syracuse (5-3, 1-2) to its lowest scoring output this season and the Cards emerged from the BIG EAST Conference encounter with a win, 27-10.
Louisville did all of its scoring in the first and fourth quarters and its defense kept the Orange from the end zone until the last two minutes of play. Syracuse's Ryan Nassib connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jarrod West with 1:31 remaining in the game.
Louisville got on the board first in the game, moving 92 yards in four plays. Ted Bridgewater teamed with Devante Parker on a 42-yard touchdown pass to put the hosts up.
On its second possession, Louisville negotiated its way into Syracuse territory again. Two plays after a Bridgewater touchdown pass was negated by a penalty, Orange linebacker Marquis Spruill forced Dominique Brown to fumble and linebacker Siriki Diabate recovered at the 32-yard line.
When the Cardinals got the ball back, they went 50 yards in nine plays, a drive finished off by Bridgewaters two-yard TD toss to Josh Chichester that put Louisville up 14-0 in the first quarter.
Trailing 14-0 after one quarter, Syracuse rebounded to get on the board with a second-quarter field goal by Ross Krautman, narrowing the gap to 14-3 at the half, in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Papa Johns Stadium.
The Orange marched 61 yards in 11 plays, a drive capped by Krautmann's 34-yard three-pointer. A 29-yard run by Antwon Bailey helped jump start Syracuse on its first scoring possession of the afternoon.
After a scoreless third quarter, Louisville extended its advantage by sandwiching two Chris Philpott field goals (44, 32) around a 61-yard touchdown run by Vic Anderson.
Syracuse found the end zone after a six-play, 63-yard drive that was capped by Nassib's TD pass.
Antwon Bailey had 70 yards on 15 carries to pace the Orange ground attack. Nassib was 22 of 36 for 162 yards and a touchdown. Van Chew, Alec Lemon and Nick Provo each had four catches.
