Coming off a double overtime loss to Rutgers last weekend, 19-16, third-year head coach Doug Marrone and the Orange football team (3-2) will look to get back on track when the team travels to Tulane on Saturday (8:00 p.m., Cox).
"The way to overcome things is to work hard," Marrone said. "The message that I told the players is that you can't let one loss lead to another. We have to find a way to get a level of focus about ourselves, to go out there and work hard, which we will."
The Louisiana Superdome, the location of Saturday's contest, has hosted some of the most memorable games in SU history. In football, the Orange is 3-0-1 all-time in the Superdome with three victories against Tulane.
"For every game we play on the road, we try to set a picture in the players' mind of the venue that we're playing in of what it's like and how it's going to be," Marrone said. "This way, it kinds of cuts the anxiety off and they know exactly what type of atmosphere they're going in to."
Marrone hopes that the Syracuse defense, which gave the Orange a chance to defeat the Scarlet Knights last weekend by causing four turnovers, will continue to perform as the younger players get more experience in place of injured veterans.
"I'm very excited about the progression of the younger players and how they're coming along in the system, and I'm excited to get some of our veterans back," Marrone said. "What that will do is create depth where we will not lose a lot from the first group to the second group no matter who it is."
SU owns a 6-1 record all-time against the Green Wave, including wins the last four meetings. Tulane comes into the game after dropping a 45-6 decision to Army last weekend.
The Green Wave is 2-3 on the year and owns a 1-1 record in Conference USA play. Its two victories this season have come against Southeastern Louisiana (47-33) in the season opener on Sept. 3 and at UAB (49-19) on Sept. 17. Offensively, quarterback Ryan Griffin has completed 78-of-137 passes for 980 yards and seven touchdowns against three interceptions. Three of Griffin's TD tosses came in the season-opening win against Southeastern Louisiana. Orleans Darkwa is the Green Waves leading ball carrier. He has 299 yards on 72 carries and four touchdowns.
"We're going down and playing a team in Tulane that's a good football team," Marrone said. "It's a long travel day for us, going down there on Friday. It's a late game, and we have to be ready to play."
Defensively, linebacker Trent Mackey is tied for 11th nationally in tackles per game (11.0). He has 55 stops, including 31 solo tackles. The next closest Tulane defender is safety Shakiel Smith (32 tackles).
"Tulane has done a very nice job in their coverage concepts," Marrone said. "Against Duke, they intercepted a pass for a touchdown. I believe against UAB they picked a pass for a touchdown, so they do an excellent job in their coverage aspect of reading the quarterback and breaking on the football. When that happens, you have to do a very good job of running precise routes and timing."
After a bye week, the Orange will return to the Carrier Dome to host BIG EAST foe West Virginia on October 21 (8:00 p.m., ESPN or ESPN2). Tickets are available for the game online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) and by phone (888-DOMETIX). The Time Warner Triple Play Pack, which includes one ticket to any of three home games of choice, starts at $72, while group sales discounts groups of 20 or more to any home game. Group sales are available by calling 315-443-3212 or emailing grpsales@syr.edu.
