Behind a 59-10 shot advantage and consistent offensive attack, No. 2 Cornell skated to a 9-2 victory against the Syracuse ice hockey team on Tuesday night at Lynah Rink. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and Margot Scharfe scored goals for the Orange (5-7-0), while Kallie Billadeau made 50 saves in goal. SU returns home for a Friday night exhibition contest with McGill at 5:00 p.m. from Tennity Ice Pavilion.
The Big Red, which has outscored its opponents 33-4 through four games this season, relentlessly peppered Billadeau throughout the contest, crashing the net and drawing 11 penalties during the night. The Cornell power play was 3-of-8, while Syracuse was 1-of-3 on the man advantage.
Cornell got things started with 5:53 left in the first period as Brianne Jenner netted her fourth goal of the season when she took a pass from Rebecca Johnston and buried a shot past Billadeau for the score. The Big Red would extend its lead to two less than two minutes later when Jillian Saulnier potted a shorthanded goal.
The Big Red continued its attack to begin the second period on a power play goal from Chelsea Karpenko before Johnston then made it 4-0 just 38 seconds later on a goal following a pass from Saulnier.
Syracuse got on the board six minutes into the stanza as senior co-captain Taylor Metcalfe sent Carrie-Mattimoe in on a breakaway with the Orange on the penalty kill. Carrie-Mattimoe settled the puck and beat Mazzotta for her fourth goal of the season.
Scharfe nearly cut the deficit to two goals with 2:38 left in the second period when she too was sent in on a breakaway, but this time Mazzotta was able to squeeze her pads together to deny the scoring bid.
Cornell made it 5-1 with 56 seconds left in the frame as Monika Leck finished off a play that started with an Emily Fulton shot that ricocheted off the mask of Billadeau.
The Big Red opened it up in the final period with an 18-2 shot advantage, and added three more goals with tallies from Karpenko, Cudmore and White.
Syracuse added a goal late on the power play to make it 6-2 on Scharfe's fourth goal of the season, but Saulnier quickly put Cornell up 9-2 27 seconds later to close out the scoring.
