SU Clinches BIG EAST Berth with 3-1 Win Against Notre Dame

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team (19-11, 8-6) punched its ticket to Milwaukee for the BIG EAST Tournament with a 3-1 win against Notre Dame (15-11, 8-6) on Senior Day Sunday afternoon (25-23, 26-24, 24-26, 25-16) at the Women's Building.

The win against the Fighting Irish was SU's first since 1981. Su has to wait for results from this afternoon's games, but SU will either be the four or the five seed in next week's tournament.

After Noemie Lefebvre, Erin Little and Ashley Williams were honored for playing their final home match at Syracuse, the Orange erased a six point first set deficit with a 6-1 run, bringing the frame to 17-16 in favor of Notre Dame. With the set tied at 21, an ace by #Sam Hinz, along with kills from Lindsay McCabe# and Little, and an attacking error by Notre Dame finished off the set 25-23.

Lefebvre and McCabe had five kills apiece in the second set while McCabe had three blocks to give SU a 2-0 advantage heading into the break with a 26-24 set two decision.

The Fighting Irish rallied to take the third set by a score of 26-24, but the Orange would not let Notre Dame bring the match to five sets as SU took care of business in the fourth frame, 25-16. Lefebvre, Little and McCabe combined for 13 of the teams 19 kills in the set.

McCabe tied a career-high and she and Lefebvre shared a team-high 17 spikes, while Andrea Fisher joined them in double-digit kills with 14. Lefebvre had her 10th double-double of the season as she and Ashley Williams each had 23 digs. Emily Betteridge shattered her previous career-high of 39 assists with 53 helpers today.

Notre Dame's Kristen Dealy and Andrea McHugh had 14 and 12 kills, respectively.

The BIG EAST Tournament is set to take place at the McGwire Center on the campus of Marquette next Friday through Sunday.
