NEW YORK – New York's College Team is back in the Big Apple for the NIT Season Tipoff semifinals. No. 5/5 Syracuse (4-0) takes on Virginia Tech (3-0) in the second half of a doubleheader at Madison Square Garden at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Oklahoma State and Stanford play in the first semifinal, beginning at 7 p.m.
Wednesday's game will be televised on ESPN2. Fans can also catch all the action on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network and its flagship TK99 (99.5 FM). The audio stream of the broadcast will be available on Orange All Access on SUathletics.com. Subscriptions to Orange All Access are available at daily, monthly and yearly rates.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Syracuse is no stranger to Madison Square Garden, having played its first game there on Feb. 1, 1939. The Orange has an all-time record of 85-71 in games played in the historic venue, including a 67-43 mark during head coach Jim Boeheim's tenure. Forty-two of the 85 victories have come in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Orange will be playing in MSG for the 30th consecutive year.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
The Orange extended its winning streak to four games with a 92-47 victory against Colgate on Nov. 19. Four players scored in double figures for the Orange, led by Dion Waiters' 16 points.
The Raiders jumped out to 6-2 lead but Syracuse came back and tied the score at 8-8 at the 16:43 mark. With the Orange leading, 20-13, junior James Southerland sparked SU on a 32-6 scoring run as it took control of the game. Southerland scored nine of his 14 points in a span of 42 seconds during the offensive outburst. Syracuse led, 52-19, at halftime and went on to the 45-point victory.
Sophomore #C.J. Fair# added 13 points off the bench, while redshirt senior Scoop Jardine finished with 11 points, six assists and three steals.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech defeated Monmouth and Florida International to advance to the semifinals of the NIT Season Tipoff. The Hokies other victory was a 64-53 win against East Tennessee State
Guard Dorenzo Hudson is the Atlantic Coast Conference's Co-Player of the Week after averaging 24.5 points and 2.5 assists in the first two games of the tournament. He tallied 31 points against FIU and leads the team in scoring (19.3 ppg.). Dorian Finney-Smith leads Virginia Tech's efforts on the boards, grabbing 11.0 rebounds per game.
Seth Greenberg is in his ninth season at the helm of the Hokies' program. He has guided Virginia Tech to a record of 157-106, improving his overall record to 370-276. Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Greenberg served as head coach at South Florida (1996-2003) and Long Beach State (1990-96).
THE SERIES
Syracuse leads the all-time series with Virginia Tech, 3-2. After losing the first two meetings between the two schools in 1976 and 1978, the Orange has won three in a row against the Hokies. The last time the teams met, Syracuse defeated Virginia Tech, 76-64, on January 31, 2004.
