SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 5 Syracuse outscored Saint Rose by 18 in the second half as the Orange defeated the Golden Knights 87-69 in its final tune up for the regular season on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse had nine players score seven points or more, led by Kris Joseph who poured in a team-high 12 points. SU's defense forced 27 Golden Knights turnovers in which the Orange turned into 38 points. SU also blocked 12 shots and had 15 steals.
After the Golden Knights scored the first four points of the game, the Orange used a 19-2 run over a seven minute span to take a 19-6 lead, highlighted by a thunderous dunk from freshman Rakeem Christmas. Joseph had five points during the run.
Travis Gill, however, would cap off a 24-11 Golden Knights spurt with a three point dagger to end the first half and send the two teams into the locker room even at 30-30. Saint Rose out-rebounded Syracuse 18-17 in the first half.
Syracuse opened the second half with a full court press which stifled Saint Rose as the Golden Knights committed 17 of their 27 turnovers in the second stanza.
With SU leading 43-42, a Michael Carter-Williams bucket from behind the arch jumpstarted a 12-2 run which gave the Orange a 55-44 lead. After a layup from Saint Rose's Andre Pope, Joseph answered with a driving layup of his own, pushing the lead back to double-digits with 10:40 remaining. SU kept its double-digit margin for the remainder of the game.
A James Southerland put back slam gave SU its largest advantage of the game at 20 points, and SU would eventually wrap up the 18 point victory. The Orange shot 50 percent for the game (34-of-68) and 45 percent from three point range (10-of-22).
Pope of Saint Rose led all scores with 14 points.
Syracuse begins the regular season this Saturday against Fordham at the Carrier Dome with tipoff set for 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
