SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Twelve different SU players found the scoring column to help No. 3/3 Syracuse (10-0) defeat George Washington (4-5) 85-50 on Saturday night in front of 23,226 fans at the Carrier Dome.
Dion Waiters had a career-high 19 points to lead the Orange, including numerous highlight dunks, and set a career-best with six steals. He also added five rebounds and four assists to his stat line.
SU's balanced attack saw six different Orange players score at least eight points, while its bench pitched in with 48 points. The Orange held George Washington to 30 percent shooting for game (19-of-62), while blocking eight shots and tallying 11 steals.
George Washington was assessed a technical foul at 18:56 of the opening frame for having an incorrect number in the official scorebook, which Brandon Triche converted one of two from the line. That free throw was the first of seven straight points scored by the Orange to open the game.
A lay up from #C.J. Fair# put Syracuse up 23-12, and the Orange played with a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half. SU had a 45-25 advantage at the break.
With Syracuse up 50-35 at the 16:38 mark of the second half, the Orange broke the game open with a 19-3 run over an eight minute span to lead 69-38. Five different players scored during the run.
The Orange turned 18 Colonial turnovers into 34 points, and outscored George Washington 34-3 in that category. Syracuse registered 52 points in the paint compared to 30 for George Washington. SU also hit on 17-of-19 from the free throw line. Through its first 10 games this season, Syracuse has defeated the opposition by an average of 22.8 points.
Freshman Michael Carter-Williams had the most productive game of the career with five points, eight assists and one block. Kris Joseph had a team-high eight rebounds.
The Colonials were led by David Pellom with 12 points, while Lasan Kromah and Dwayne Smith each had 10.
The Orange plays its first true road game next Saturday when the SU travels to Raleigh, N.C. to play N.C. State (6:30 p.m., ESPN2). The two teams met last year in the Carrier Dome with Syracuse coming out victorious, 65-59.
