An accomplished financial officer and athletics administrator, Terry Donovan joins the Syracuse University Department of Athletics as executive senior associate athletics director/chief financial officer. Donovan brings 15 years of experience in sports, including the past 12 at Arizona State and the University of Nevada, to Syracuse. He will be responsible for all aspects of the financial and human resources matters within the athletics department.
“Terry brings incredible global athletic department experience, wisdom and effective strategies,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. “He is the perfect administrator to take over the CFO role as we transition to the ACC and elevate Syracuse University athletics nationally. He becomes a deserving member of what I believe is an exceptional executive administrative staff that includes the previous additions of deputy athletic directors Herman Frazier and Dr. Renee Baumgartner and special assistant to the athletics director Floyd Little. Terry will bring new ideas and efficiencies to our department while we continue to pursue success of the highest caliber in every facet of athletics.”
As assistant athletics director for finance and human resources at Arizona State, Donovan managed budget projections and preparation, participated in senior-level business and financial planning, contract negotiations for vendors, had primary oversight of ICA, SAF and EADA audits and supervised the business office staff.
At Nevada, Donovan was an associate director of athletics for finance and human resource management after serving as assistant athletics director for business operations. He was responsible for managing, preparing, reconciling and administering revenue and expense budgets for the department and had daily oversight for all athletics department budgets. He also analyzed and forecast department revenues and debt schedules, including capital projects.
He began his intercollegiate athletics career at Nevada in 2000 as a sales and promotions representative. After two years of coordinating all pre-game and halftime promotions and assisting in the marketing plan for football, basketball and baseball, Donovan was promoted to director of sales and ticket operations. He held that position until 2004 when he was promoted to assistant athletics director.
After graduating from the University of Nevada in 1997, Donovan was named director of group sales and ticket manager for the Reno Chukars Professional Baseball organization. After nine months in that position, he was promoted to chief financial officer and assistant general manager, a position he held until joining the University of Nevada athletics department staff.
Donovan earned two degrees at Nevada, including his undergraduate degree in finance in 1997 and his M.B.A. in 2003. He is a member of Collegiate Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA) and was a presenter at the 2006 NACWAA Convention in Denver. Donovan and his wife, Brandi, have a son, Eli.
