SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A clutch performance from Scoop Jardine down the stretch lifted #4/3 Syracuse (8-0) past #10/9 Florida (5-2) in the BIG EAST/SEC Challenge at the Carrier Dome on Friday night in front of 24,459 fans.
It was the largest on-campus crowd of the season in college basketball, bettering the 24,179 at Rupp Arena for Kentucky-Portland.
With under six minutes to go and Syracuse up three points, Jardine scored eight of the next nine Orange points to distance SU from Florida and preserve the victory.
Jardine filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals. During the course of the game, Jardine became the 56th player in program history to score 1,000 career points. Brandon Triche led the Orange with 20 points, while Kris Joseph also scored double-figures with 14.
SU capitalized on the boards, out-rebounding the visiting Gators, 40-33.
The first half featured seven ties and five leads changes. Fab Melo got the Orange off to a fast start, scoring seven of SU's first 10 points, including two thunderous dunks that ignited the crowd.
From there, Joseph and Triche carried the offensive load for the rest of the half as both dropped seven points to join Melo. Triche's jumper from the free-throw line gave SU its first lead of the game at 18-16. SU would play with the lead for the rest of the half and was up 31-27 at the break.
Syracuse opened the second half with an 8-3 run, and took its largest lead of the game at 39-30. However, an 0-for-9 drought ensued and let the Gator's crawl back into the game and eventually tie the contest at 41 with a Kenny Boynton three, forcing SU to take a timeout.
Boynton converting on his next two from long range, but Triche would answer with a three of his own to tie the game at 49. Jardine would then steal a Florida inbound pass and find a streaking Joseph for a dunk to give SU a 51-49 lead and send the Dome into a frenzy.
Jardine took over down the stretch, converting the next three hoops for the Orange, including a three-point dagger to give SU a 61-53 lead with 3:35 remaining. The senior scored eight of the team's nine points during that stretch, while he and Triche converted on their free throws to ice the game. Triche was 9-of-9 from the charity stripe.
#C.J. Fair# set a career-high with 11 rebounds to lead the Orange. Florida was paced offensively by Boynton who finshed with a game-high 22 points. Syracuse is now 3-1 all-time against Florida.
