SYRACUSE, N.Y. – #3/3 Syracuse (9-0) forced 19 Marshall turnovers en route to a 62-56 victory against the Thundering Herd (5-2) on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome.
SU had three players score in double-figures, led by Dion Waiters with 15 points. Kris Joseph tallied 11 points, and Scoop Jardine poured in 10. Jardine added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals to his stat line, while Joseph pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Syracuse, who leads the nation in steals, hit its season average with 12 against the Herd. Jardine had a team-best three steals, while Waiters, Brandon Triche and James Southerland each added two.
The Orange never trailed in the game and took the lead for good at 8-6, courtesy of a Dion Waiters slam dunk. SU outscored the Herd 20-6 over the next nine minutes, and took a 31-18 lead into the locker room.
A free throw from Southerland provided the Orange with its largest lead of the game at 44-28 with 10:44 remaining in the second half. But the Herd, which was 0-of-18 from three point range up until the final five minutes of the game, heated up, making five of its final six three point attempts to narrow the Syracuse lead.
A layup from Marshall's Dennis Tinnon, who finished with a game-high of 17 points and 15 rebounds, brought the Herd to within eight with 1:05 remaining. However, Syracuse would make four of its final six free throws to ice the game. A last second Marshall three pointer brought the final score to 62-56.
SU's defense held the Herd to 34 percent shooting on the evening (22-of-65), and just 20 percent from behind the arch (5-of-24). The Orange blocked 10 shots, led by Fab Melo who registered four. Melo also had nine points and four rebounds.
Tinnon recorded his third straight double-double for the Herd.
The Orange is back in action on Saturday when George Washington invades the Carrier Dome at 7:00 p.m. SU holds a 7-1 series advantage against the Colonials.
