Next Year: A New Year's Resolution column you say? Fine, it's like “Name that Tune”, I can write it in one sentence. The various athletic teams at Syracuse resolve to display maximum effort both in the classroom and on the field/court/course/ice and to win as many games/matches/meets/races as possible in 2012. Of course this column isn't a race, so let's deliver a department wide wish list instead.
For many teams it's a simple wish, that the next step be taken. Ice Hockey coach Paul Flanagan has his eyes on the CHA crown. New volleyball coach Leonid Yelin took Louisville to 14 NCAA tournaments, can he take Syracuse to a first? And those that have come so close speak solely of national championships. Field Hockey and women's lacrosse have both been to Final Fours, but the ultimate prize remains for Ange Bradley and Gary Gait's squads.
For cross country and track and field coach Chris Fox, we wish for a bigger mantel. His fleet footed runners keep winning him coach of the year awards and frankly the man deserves a place to display them.
For the oarsmen and women, we wish for success both home and abroad. With the London Olympics rapidly approaching the hope is that Orange rowing alums(Anna Goodale et all) repeat the successes of Beijing '08.
For both soccer squads we wish to hear more of Phil Wheddon and Ian McIntyre's delightful British sayings after wins next year. There's nothing like an English accent to make you momentarily forget that Doug Marrone is the football coach around here.
But since he is, for football we wish for new ink for the offensive record books. Already under Doug, Nick Provo has taken over top tight end honors numerically speaking. Next season expect both Ryan Nassib and Alec Lemon to pass a few quarterbacks and wide receivers both you and NFL fans have heard of on many of the all time Orange lists.
For softball, we wish they make themselves at home in the Dome. For the first time ever the softball squad has no weather worries for March home games when Canisius and Colgate come to the Carrier Dome. We also wish that Jenna Caira strikes all the Golden Griffins and Raiders out.
For the tennis team, Luke Jensen continues to have enough energy to fuel the entire athletic department. We wish that his abundant enthusiasm never wanes.
For the women's basketball team the wish is that December's road weariness turns into Big East road readiness. We'll find out if the near 17,000 miles already traversed have turned the team into a conference house guest no one wants to stay for long.
For men's lacrosse, we wish that new stars be revealed. With multiple time first team All Americans Joel White, John Galloway, and John Lade among many others gone it's time for the next generation of Syracuse lax stars to identify themselves. History says they're already on John Desko's roster, we just don't know their names yet.
For men's basketball, the simplest wish of all, a happy and healthy New Year. Because when you're undefeated and #1, what else is there to ask for?
And for all the loyal Syracuse fans out there? We wish for you another year of enjoying your favorite school in action wherever you may be.
Happy New Year everyone.
