14 AND COUNTING
Syracuse has opened the season with 14 straight wins for the second consecutive year. The Orange started last season by winning its first 18 games, which marked the second-best start in school history. SU was one win away from equaling the program's best start of 19-0 in 1999-2000.
AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR
The Orange is one of four Division I teams that remain unbeaten this season. The elite group also includes Baylor, Missouri and Murray State. Both Missouri and Murray State extended their winning streaks on Friday night.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse defeated Seton Hall, 75-49, in its BIG EAST opener on Wednesday, Dec. 28 in the Carrier Dome. Sophomore Fab Melo recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and a single-game school record 10 blocked shots.
The Orange never trailed in the game and led, 34-15, at halftime. A 14-4 run in the middle of the second half gave SU its largest lead of the night at 69-36. Syracuse's defense, which leads the nation in steals per game, forced 23 Pirate turnovers and held Seton Hall to 32 percent shooting (19-for-16) in its 14th consecutive victory.
Melo's 10 blocked shots bettered Etan Thomas' previous record of nine rejections, which he did three times in his career. Melo was one of three players to score in double figures for SU. Sophomore Dion Waiters led the way with 15 points, while junior Brandon Triche added 11 points. Sophomore #C.J. Fair# came off the bench and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEMONS
DePaul enters its BIG EAST opener with a 9-3 mark. It marks the best start for the Blue Demons since they started the 1999-00 campaign with the same record. DePaul ended its non-conference schedule with a 63-58 victory against Cal-Poly.
Sophomore forward Cleveland Melvin, the 2010-11 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, is DePaul's leading scorer, averaging 18.5 points per game. He also leads the squad with 13 blocked shots. Sophomore guard Brandon Young is second on the team in scoring (17.4 ppg.) and leads the team with 29 assists. Senior center Krys Faber leads the Blue Demons on the boards, averaging 6.6 per game.
Oliver Purnell is in his second season at the helm of the DePaul program. Purnell, who has also served as head coach at Clemson, Dayton, Old Dominion and Radford, recorded his 400th career coaching victory last season.
THE SERIES
Syracuse leads the all-time series against DePaul, 8-4. The Orange has won the last five meetings, including last year's match up at the Carrier Dome by a score of 107-59. The Blue Demons last victory against the Orange was a 108-69 win on its home court in 2005-06.
