Syracuse University Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross is one of six directors of athletics who will serve as a panelist to address the challenges in their roles leading intercollegiate athletics programs at the 10th annual IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum December 7 in New York City. Gross and athletics directors Bob Bowlsby (Stanford), John Currie (Kansas State), Dan Guerrero (UCLA), Cheryl Levick (Georgia State), and Scott Woodward (Washington) are the featured speakers for the "Athletic Directors Speak Out on the Complex, Ever-changing Issues Facing College Sports Administrators" discussion.
The group will address a variety of topics surrounding recurring departmental matters, such as academic performance standards, pressures of commercialism and revenue growth and increasing expenses and cost containment measures. They will also share their thoughts on some of the more newsworthy and topical subjects, such as conference realignment and conference-owned TV and digital networks, to the debates surrounding the “full cost of scholarship” and changes to the NCAA penalty structure.
The two-day IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum serves as a platform for stakeholders to openly examine and candidly debate the numerous and complex issues surrounding college sports and features 53 guest presenters and panelists. A "must attend" event since 2002 for anyone involved in the business of college sports, the IMG Intercollegiate Athletics Forum provides an "insider's view" by offering firsthand insights from those directly shaping the future of intercollegiate athletics -- athletic directors, university presidents, conference commissioners, coaches, academic advisers, media and corporate sponsors.
Gross' mission for Syracuse Athletics is to compete and perform at the highest level in everything – on the playing field, in the classroom, and in the community, in an effort to graduate student-athletes who will make a positive impact on society.
Now in his seventh year at Syracuse, Gross has put his imprint on the program. A veteran athletics administrator, Gross has led Syracuse Athletics to historic levels. Syracuse had its fourth-best finish in school history in the 2011 NACDA Learfield Directors' Cup. In fact, the across-the-board finishes in the last four years have been part of the top seven performances in SU Athletics' history. In September 2011, Gross and Chancellor Nancy Cantor worked diligently to secure SU's future, accepting an invitation to join the Atlantic Coast Conference. In competition, many teams have had their greatest success in history. As the lone BCS University in the state of New York, Gross continues to brand Syracuse Athletics as New York's College Team.
Gross has increased Athletics' revenues to record levels by increasing donor giving to its highest amount in history, significantly increasing corporate sponsorships, and creating multiple new line item revenues. The department is the leading campus unit in the University's 'Campaign for Syracuse', a $1 billion fundraising endeavor, which was publicly launched in November 2007.
