
Orange Blasts Bulls, 6-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team extended its win streak to five matches Saturday afternoon after defeating Buffalo, 6-1, at the Drumlins Tennis Center. Despite losing one of its doubles matches, the Orange was able to rebound and win the doubles point and five of six singles matches.
Junior Alessondra Parra won her fourth straight singles match at the No. 1 position after a three-set win against Buffalo's Diana Popescu. Fellow junior Emily Harman earned her 80th overall win after she beat Aleksandra Petrova in straight sets of 6-2 and 7-5. Freshman Maddie Kobelt was back at the No. 3 position and handily defeated Marta Stoyanova, 6-4, 6-3.
The Orange's only singles loss came at the No. 4 spot, where UB's Kira Golenko bested freshman Aleah Marrow in three sets of 7-6, 3-6 and 10-7. Senior Christina Tan earned her fourth singles victory of the season at the No. 5 spot, defeating Buffalo's Tamara Markovic in straight sets of 6-4 and 6-3. Senior Simone Kalhorn remained undefeated at the No. 6 spot on the season after rallying to beat Miranda Podlas in three sets of 2-6, 6-0 and 6-2.
Harman and Kobelt were paired at the No. 1 doubles spot and lost their second match of the season, 6-8, to UB's duo of Popescu and Podlas. Kalhorn and Parra easily defeated Buffalo's pairing of Markovic and Stoyanova, 8-1, at the No. 2 spot and senior Jacquelynn Tang teamed up with Marrow for an 8-4 win against the Bulls' duo of Petrova and Shelby Bates.
Syracuse moves to 6-1 in its 2011 campaign and puts its win streak on the line Sunday morning when the team hosts BIG EAST foe Cincinnati. The match, which is free of charge, begins at 10 a.m. at the Drumlins Tennis. A recap and results will be available on SUAthletics.com.
