
Syracuse Wins GSU Tournament Title

DECATUR, Ga. - Syracuse (4-0) captured the Georgia State Tournament title with wins against Morehead State (0-3), 9-1, and Georgia State (2-1), 13-1 on Sunday. SU scored 22 runs off 23 hits on day two and outscored the opposition 33-3 in tournament play to earn the crown. The 4-0 record marks a program-best start for the Orange.
Junior Lisaira Daniels and sophomore Veronica Grant led the Orange at the plate on day two. Daniels hit .625, going 5-for-8 with three runs scored, a pair of RBI and two stolen bases while Grant hit .571 with four hits and five runs scored while adding a trio of swipes.
Juniors Kelly Saco and Lacey Kohl both homered in game one of the day against Morehead State, it was the 10th career homer for Saco and the third for Kohl. Saco had three hits on the day while Kohl added a pair. Junior Stephanie Watts also logged multiple hits on day two, going 3-for-8 while senior Rachel Helman was 2-for-4. Freshman Shirley Daniels, senior Hallie Gibbs and sophomore Morgan Nandin all added hits to the Orange effort.
Junior pitcher Jenna Caira earned both wins in the circle, allowing one earned run while striking out seven in 10.0 innings for a 0.90 ERA.
Syracuse got on the board first against Morehead State, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and doubled its lead in the bottom of the third. The Orange went up 5-0 with a run in the bottom of the fourth before Morehead State scored its lone run in the top of the fifth. SU put the game away, securing the run rule victory with back-to-back two run innings.
It was the same scenario against Georgia State as Syracuse scored in the top of the first, 1-0. A five run third inning gave the Orange a nice cushion, 6-0 and the squad added another run in the top of the fourth, 7-0. GSU scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth but a six-run seventh inning for the Orange put the game on ice, 13-1.
Syracuse continues its preseason tournament road swing when it heads to Tuscaloosa for the 'Bama Bash beginning Friday, February 18.
