CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senior Rick Jackson had a season-best 23 point performance to lead 12/14 Syracuse (27-7) past Indiana State (20-14), 77-60, in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena on Friday.
This marks SU's 34th appearance in the tournament. Syracuse earned its 53rd victory in the NCAA Tournament, including its 45th under head coach Jim Boeheim.
The Orange advances to play ninth-seeded rv/- Marquette on Sunday at 7:40 p.m. The Golden Eagles defeated Xavier 66-55 earlier today.
Jackson went 9-11 from the foul line and contributed seven rebounds and two blocks. Junior Kris Joseph recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and a season high 10 rebounds. Freshman #C.J. Fair added 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior Scoop Jardine# finished with nine points, nine assists and three steals.
Jardine opened the second half with a three-pointer to put Syracuse back up by double-figures, 41-30, but Indiana State quickly cut that lead to six, 41-35, at the 17:43 mark. The Sycamores continued to claw back, trailing by just four, 42-38, with 15:56 remaining.
The Orange constructed a 7-0 run, compliments of six consecutive points from Jackson to increase SU's lead to 13, 51-38, with 11:50 left on the clock. Syracuse's defense drew two offensive charges during the run to help stop the Sycamores comeback attempt.
ISU would not go away and pulled within 10, 56-46, at the 7:15 mark. Syracuse began to pull away, increasing its lead to 15, 65-50, with 3:15 remaining in regulation. The Orange led by as much as 23 with 1:48 to play before securing the 17-point victory.
Jackson jump started the Orange's offense from the start, scoring its first four points and Syracuse held a 10-6 advantage at the 16-minute mark of the first half. He continued to produce with four more consecutive points to put SU up 14-8.
A three-pointer by Jardine launched an 11-0 run by the Orange, which was capped by a Dion Waiters jumper in transition to make it 25-11 with 11 minutes to play. Joseph added four straight points during the run to give Syracuse its first double digit lead of the half.
Freshmen Fab Melo and Fair combined for six points to help SU maintain a double-digit lead, 31-14, at the seven minute mark. Indiana State nailed back-to-back three pointers to cut Syracuse's lead to nine, 31-22, with 5:34 remaining in the opening half.
The Sycamores put together a 5-0 run to pull within eight, 38-30 at the half.
Syracuse had an all-around solid shooting night, going 23-44 (.523) overall from the floor, 7-16 (.438) from behind the arc and 24-31 (.774) at the charity stripe.
Indiana State had 11 players contribute to the scoring column, including a team-best 12 points from Jake Kelly.
