PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Syracuse University softball squad (21-5) swept the Penn Quakers (5-7) in a doubleheader on Friday, March 18. The Orange defeated the Quakers 6-1 in game one and 8-1 in game two.
Jasmine Watson and Lacey Kohl led the Orange offensive effort in the team's last non-conference matchup before BIG EAST play begins next week. Watson was 2-for-4 at the plate and recorded her third homerun of the season in game one. Kohl hit .714 for the day, including a three-run homer in game two. Stephanie Watts, Hallie Gibbs, and Lisaira Daniels also added multiple hits in today's games.
In game one, back-to-back doubles from Kohl and Gibbs gave the Orange an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Rachel Helman led off for the Orange in the top of the second with a liner into right to bring up Watson, who lifted the 3-1 pitch over the right field fence, putting SU on top, 3-0.
L. Daniels legged out an infield single and scored on a two-base shot by Kohl to give Syracuse a 4-0 lead in the third inning.
Jenna Caira and the Orange made quick work of the Penn batters throughout the game, as Caira allowed just three hits. The Quakers threatened in the bottom of the third, as Samantha Erosa drew the leadoff walk, stole second and took third on a groundout. Alicia Prystowsky nailed a line drive right at Morgan Nandin, which popped out of the shortstop's glove. However, when Prystowsky stopped running, Nandin was able to recover and throw to first to end the inning.
Penn's only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Quakers loaded the bases, thanks to a single, a walk and a hit batter. SU recorded the fielder's choice out at the plate, but Kohl sent the ball sailing into the outfield in an attempt to turn two, allowing Penn to score on the error.
In the top of the fifth, SU added to its lead, as Kelly Saco blasted a double on the first pitch of her at bat. Helman stepped up to the plate with two outs and two Penn errors allowed Saco to score.
SU added its last run in the game in the top of the seventh. L. Daniels slapped a single and Kohl was hit by a pitch. Gibbs nailed a double to the leftfield gap, as the Orange earned the 6-1 victory.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Orange got off to another quick start. L. Daniels reached on an error and moved to third on a single in the top of the first. Gibbs followed with a single up the middle to score the run and put SU on top, 1-0.
The bats on both sides were silent in the second, but the Orange rallied in the visiting half of the third to break open the game. Grant drew a leadoff walked and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. L. Daniels grounded out to score Grant. On the 10th pitch of her at bat, Gibbs nailed a two-run homer on a line to straight-away center to put the Orange up, 4-0. Watts added another run for SU in the top of the fourth.
Stacy Kuwik, who tallied 10 strikeouts in the outing, retired the Quakers' side in the third and fourth innings on six straight strikeouts. Her no-hitter was broken in the bottom of the sixth on an infield single.
In the top of the seventh, Kohl blasted a three-run homer to put SU up 8-0. Kuwik and the Orange conceded just one in the bottom of the inning, but SU sailed to an 8-1 win.
The Orange outhit the Quakers, 10-3 in game one, and 12-3 in game two, marking the eighth and ninth times this season that SU has logged 10 or more hits in a game.
