SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Kelsey Rubeor (Murrieta Valley, Calif.) and junior Roman Acosta (Mosesto, Calif.) of the Orange track and field team are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of March 28, 2011.
Rubeor won the heptathlon at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational last weekend, placing first in five out of the seven events. She earned a personal best 5,337 points to qualify for the ECAC Championship in the heptathlon. She also qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships in the high jump, long jump and javelin. During each of the last three seasons, she has met the NCAA qualifying standards for the heptathlon.
Rubeor, a health and exercise science major, and members of the Orange will compete in the Arizona State Sun Angel Classic on April 9 in Tempe, Ariz.
Acosta has worked his way into Syracuse's top distance running core as a junior. During the indoor track and field season, he recorded personal best times in three different events. He took third in the mile with a time of 4:20.77 at the Cornell Upstate Challenge, ran the 5,000m run in a time of 14:25.97 at the Boston University Valentine Invitational and took 12th in the 3000m with a time of 8:22.50 at the Columbia Last Chance. Following his sophomore campaign, he was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team.
Acosta, a dual major in philosophy and political science, and the Orange will compete in the Princeton Sam Howell Invitational on April 1 and 2.
