Running back Antwon Bailey ran 20 times for 118 yards and scored on a one-yard plunge in the third quarter to lead the White team to a 13-7 victory against the Blue team in the Syracuse Orange Spring game on Saturday before 4,206 fans in the Carrier Dome.
The White team rallied from a 7-0 deficit to score 13 unanswered points. Ryan Lichenstein converted field goals of 33 and 25 yards, respectively, at the end of the opening half to cut the Blue team's advantage to 7-6 at the intermission. Bailey's touchdown run was the only score of the second half.
“I'm proud of the kids. I thought they had a good game," said White team head coach Scott Shafer. "We have a lot of work to do, but I think we are in a position where the kids believe we can be better than people on the outside think we can be.”
Shafer, SU's defensive coordinator, and Nathaniel Hackett, the Orange offensive coordinator, served as head coaches for the Orange Spring game.
"I think every business organization has a plan of succession and I think you have to work on coaches who want to better themselves and keep moving up," said head coach Doug Marrone. "Each coach and coordinator will have a different perspective on things. It's just part of what we do as a game plan for our coaching staff."
Both Shafer and Hackett saw the field from a different perspective, working the sidelines instead of calling a game from the coaches box.
“It was one of the harder games to watch for two reasons. I'm usually way up there in that white box where you can see everything but on the sideline you can't see a doggone thing, so that was crazy. It was hard not calling a game, I was bugging (linebacker coach and White team defensive coordinator) Danny Conley a bunch and then I finally said I have to flip this mike up and just let him go. But great playing and it was a difficult thing to watch because you want your defense to play well and then you cheer for the offense.”
The Blue geam threatened on its last possession, driving deep into White team territory before the possession stalled.
“We didn't win the game, which was unfortunate," said Blue team head coach Nathaniel Hackett. "We really wanted to finish the game on a bang and throw a ball up there to [Adrian] Flemming on the outside. We had to check down, and it didn't really work on that fourth and 10, but other than that, I thought the guys played really hard. Ryan Nassib looked really good on that other side. We tried to get him out of his game the whole time. [Nick] Provo looked good, so it was a fun day and we are really excited about where we have to go from here.”
Early in the first quarter, the Blue team scored first when Kevyn Scott intercepted a Ryan Nassib pass and returned it untouched 33 yards into the endzone in the first offensive series for the White team.
The two teams played four, 12-minute quarters of live action. Only kickoffs and returns were kept out of the format.
After throwing the interception on his first pass attempt of the game, Nassib settled in for the White team. He completed 14-of-24 passes for 227 yards. Tight end Nick Provo had a game-high five catches for 50 yards. Wide receiver Alec Lemon had three receptions for 65 yards, Jarrod West had three catches for 43 yards and Bailey had 16 yards on three catches. Receiver Jeremiah Kobena had the longest reception of the day, a 53-yard catch of a Nassib toss.
In all, the White team totalled 343 yards in total offense and averaged 6.7 yards on 51 plays.
The White team defensive effort featured six-tackle performances from cornerbacks Jason George and Keon Lyn. George had two breakups, as well. Defensive end Chandler Jones and linebacker Dan Vaughan each had a quarter sack for the White defensive unit. Vaughn also had two pass breakups and a tackle for loss. Linebacker Lewellyn Coker had five tackles.
The Blue team featured quarterback Charley Loeb, who completed 11-of-24 passes for 133 yards. Running back Prince Tyson-Gulley led Blue team ballcarriers with 31 yards on 13 carries. Wide receiver Dorian Graham had three catches for 57 yards and Marcus Sales had three catches for 47 yards. Tight end David Stevens added two receptions for 13 yards.
Cornerback Ri'Shard Anderson had six tackles, each a stolo stop, and safety Phillip Thomas had six tackles and a pass breakup. Quarterback sacks were contributed by defensive end Brandon Sharpe and linebacker Siriki Diabate.
"I thought it was good, we came out healthy and that's the most important thing when you're a head coach going into this game," Marrone said. "The kids were very competitive and there was a lot of hitting. It's a good way to end Spring. We had the game format back and I know people appreciate that. I did too. We worked a lot more players on the field. We will just keep building it from here."
The Orange will turn its attention to the off-season conditioning program before returning in August for pre-season camp. SU opens the season against Wake Forest in the Carrier Dome on September 3. Tickets for the 2011 season are available online (click here) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOMETIX).
