Syracuse tight end Cody Catalina will not be able to return to the football field for the Orange due to a knee injury suffered during the 2009 season. Catalina injured his right knee and a nerve in his lower right leg in a game at Pittsburgh on November 7, 2009.
"We were hoping Cody could come back, but the doctors have said that will not be possible," said head coach Doug Marrone. "Cody has been very important to our program both on and off the field. He was a very productive football player for us special teams and as a tight end. Unfortunately Cody now has make his impact off the field."
The fifth-year senior was sidelined for the remainder of the 2009 season and had to sit out the 2010 season because of the injury. He had two surgeries over a period of months to address multiple knee injuries and an additional surgery in April 2010 on the injured peroneal nerve in hopes of restoring normal function of the nerve. While Catalina's knee has recovered from the surgical procedures, the lower leg nerve injury has not recovered sufficiently to permit his return to playing football. Syracuse University team physician Dr. Irving Raphael reviewed the incapacitating injury to Catalina's lower leg nerve on March 31 and medically disqualified his return to participate on the Syracuse football team.
Catalina enrolled at Syracuse as a quarterback out of Ruffs Dale, Pa. in 2007. As a sophomore in 2008, he was one of 35 players to participate in every game, primarily playing on special teams. He moved to tight end prior to 2009 Spring practice. In 2009, he played in eight games, including four starts, before suffering the season-ending knee surgery. That season he had his first career reception, for a 19 yard gain, at Penn State in his first collegiate start. He finished the season with 13 receptions for 104 yards and one touchdown.
Syracuse will continue its Spring practice season on Tuesday, April 5 at 4:20 p.m. All spring practices are free and open to the public.
Tickets for the 2011 season are available online (click here) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOMETIX).
