Touchdowns Benefit Food Bank of CNY

Five members of the 2010 New Era Pinstripe Bowl Champion Syracuse Orange football Team delivered donated food items from Tops Friendly Market to the Food Bank of Central New York today. The “Touchdowns for Turkeys” program, launched five years ago, is an agreement by Tops Friendly Markets to donate seven turkeys to the Food Bank for every Syracuse touchdown scored at the Carrier Dome during the football season. Today's donation included 3,456 cans of protein, in place of the 112 turkeys, due to the timing. In the past, the donations have been made just prior to the holiday season, but with this success of the 2010 season and the Pinstripe Bowl being played at the end of December, the donation of protein was of more value than turkeys.
“They asked what was a high quality, high nutrient item that we could use,” said Tom Slater, Executive Director Food Bank of CNY. “Every food pantry is appreciative to receive tuna fish, so we are very pleased to receive this product.”
Juniors Carl Cutler and Dan Vaughan and freshmen Robert Welsh, Clay Cleveland and Jonny Miller helped load the items into the Food Ban warehouse (7066 Interstate Island Road, Syracuse) which will used by emergency food programs for distribution to help feed the hungry of Central New York.
“It is really important for us to do this. This community come out and supports us every Saturday, so we feel it is important to come out and do whatever we can to give back to them and show that we appreciate them coming out every Saturday,” Cutler said.
