With an emphasis on red zone scheme installation the 2011 Orange offense demonstrated how experience pays dividends during the 10th session of Spring practice today in the Carrier Dome.
“Offensively I thought we looked ahead of schedule,” said head coach Doug Marrone. “I thought Ryan Nassib had a good day. He made some good throws and really got a good feel of what we're trying to accomplish down there (in the red zone). I feel very comfortable about that. He ended on a great note (in 2010) and that was something that needed to be carried over, from a confidence perspective, to the Spring.”
Nassib closed the 2010 campaign completing 13-of-21 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns in SU's 36-34 victory against Kansas State in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.
“He has a very good understanding of what we want to do and he did a very good job today on the first day, going out there and getting it done and hitting some key passes for touchdowns and that makes you feel good when you walk off the football field,” Marrone said.
Nassib credits his experience as a starter in 2010 and the veterans he has working with him on the offense for 2011 for the improvements. The 2011 offense features eight returning starters and many skill position players who contributed to the offense. The wide receiver corps includes seniors Van Chew, Marcus Sales and Dorian Graham, junior Alec Lemon, sophomores Adrian Flemming and Jarrod West and freshman Jeremiah Kobena.
“This Spring season is so different from last year because I know what I am doing so the focus is on getting better,” Nassib said. “Last Spring the focus was on the new install each practice and then getting the first reps. We are all much more comfortable in the offense.”
SU returns its top five receivers from 2010, including Chew, Lemon and Sales, in addition to running back Antwon Bailey and tight end Nick Provo. The quintet accounted for 81 percent of SU's receptions and 88 percent of its receiving yards in 2010.
“The chemistry with the receivers is very helpful,” Nassib said. “We are working more with timing and specific routes and learning what their strengths are to use it to our advantage.”
The Orange offense will be on display during the annual Spring game supported by Empower Federal Credit Union on Saturday, April 16 in the Carrier Dome. Gates open at 11:00 am for the annual Select-A-Seat program for fans to walk around the Dome to choose their location for the 2011season from all available seating, which will be marked with special signage. The Box Office will be open and staff will be available around the Dome to assist with the selection process and answer questions. The event is open to the public and there is no admission charge.
During the game, 2011 SU football posters will be available, fans can experience Club 4•4 at no charge and concession stands will be open. Free parking will be available in the stadium West lots for the Spring game.
Tickets for the 2011 season are available online (click here) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOMETIX).
