With veterans on the edge and relative newcomers playing inside the 2011 Syracuse defensive line is out to make a name for itself. The storyline for the nation's seventh-ranked defense last year was the Orange linebackers. The front four are out to take the headlines this year.
“Earlier this season, we sat down with them and told them 'Hey, you are the no-name crew,'” said defensive ends coach Tim Daoust. “There are low expectations out there, but not inside (the program). We are going to stop the run, we are going to be physical, and I know the faces may have changed, but I think we have some athletic players who really like to come to work and play football. You can expect an exciting group of players.”
Seniors Mikhail Marinovich and Chandler Jones return as the starters on the end. Marinovich has played in every game during his Syracuse career, while Jones, a 2010 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, has played in the past 25 in a row. Marinovich has 57 career tackles, including 7.5 for loss and six sacks, while Jones has recorded 109 career stops, 71 solo tackles and 19.5 tackles for a loss of yards. Jones also has three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Senior Torrey Ball, who played in all 13 games and recorded 27 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss of yards, and sophomore Micah Robinson will push Jones for snaps, while junior Brandon Sharpe, who played in every game last season, posting 13 tackles, including seven sacks, will vie for playing time behind Marinovich.
“They have really progressed and they sense that the pressure is on them to perform,” said Daoust of the defensive ends. “They have high expectations because they have experience. They're a good group of kids. They are athletic, long kids that I have very high expectations for this fall.”
The interior defensive line is getting up to speed to maintain the pace of the defense as the group seeks to replace three seniors from the 2010 line. Sophomore Jay Bromley is the most experienced defensive tackle in the group, having played in 12 of 13 games and recording seven tackles. Senior Deon Goggins and sophomore Max Beaulieu are working to secure a spot in the rotation after not playing in 2010.
Goggins transferred from Cerritos Community College just prior to the 2010 season, while Beaulieu enrolled at Syracuse in January 2010 after graduating from high school early.
At nose tackle, senior Cory Boatman is listed first on the depth chart. The Silver Spring, Md. native played in all 13 games last season, primarily on special teams and is battling for the starting spot on the defensive line this year. Sophomore Robert Welsh is pushing Boatman in practice after not playing in any games as a freshman last year, while redshirt senior Ollie Haney is recovering from a shoulder injury suffered earlier in Spring practice.
“At all times, we are talking to our kids about playing fast,” Daoust said. “We are going to play fast and we are going to play physical. As we put in new schemes, that scheme will never change.”
Fans are invited to see the progress of the line at the annual Spring game, supported by Empower Federal Credit Union, on Saturday, April 16 in the Carrier Dome. Gates open at 11:00 am for the annual Select-A-Seat program for fans to walk around the Dome to choose their location for the 2011season from all available seating, which will be marked with special signage. The Box Office will be open and staff will be available around the Dome to assist with the selection process and answer questions. The event is open to the public and there is no admission charge.
