The Syracuse University softball team looks to get back on track in the BIG EAST when the team opens its 2011 home schedule against Notre Dame on Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10. The squads will square off in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon, with the rubber match scheduled sceduled to followed on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Live stats will be available for all three of this weekend's games. Saturday's doubleheader can be seen live on Orange All-Access.
Syracuse Notes
• SU enters this weekend's matchup with a 24-8 overall record. The squad is currently 3-3 in the BIG EAST.
• Pitcher Jenna Caira recorded the lone hit for Syracuse in the team's series finale loss against South Florida on April 3. Caira's double broke up a no-hitter for USF in the top of the seventh and marked the junior's first hit of the season.
• Second baseman Stephanie Watts has supplied the offensive spark for the Orange as of late, with a team-best .343 batting average and personal career-best eight homeruns. Watts recorded two homeruns in the team's series at USF to reach the career benchmark.
Scouting Notre Dame
• After sweeping a doubleheader against Butler on April 7th, the Irish enters the weekend with a seven-game win streak. Notre Dame boasts an overall record of 24-7.
• Notre Dame is an undefeated 3-0 in the BIG EAST. The team defeated Providence in three straight games, earning two of those victories by way of the five-inning mercy rule.
• Ace pitcher Jody Valdivia (6-4) matched a career-best mark during her shutout against Butler on April 7 with 14 strikeouts.
• Alexa Maldonado leads the offensive effort for the Irish, batting .442 this season, with 42 hits, 12 RBI and two homeruns.
Series History
• Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 17-3.
• The squads last met in April 2009, when the Irish swept a doubleheader with 4-0 and 6-3 victories.
• SU's last victory came in May 2008, when the Orange took the second game of a doubleheader, earning an 8-7 win.
