COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Syracuse's NCAA Regional run was cut short with a 5-0 loss to No. 20 LSU (40-17) Saturday, May 21 at Aggie Softball Stadium.
Syracuse finishes its most successful season in program history with an overall record of 45-13, registering its first 40-win season. The Orange repeated as BIG EAST Conference Champions and earned its first NCAA Tournament win versus LSU in the first game of the College Station Regional.
LSU was productive from the opening pitch with Simone Heyward laying down a bunt to reach first base. Heyward reached third base on a sac bunt and a sac hit by the Tigers' next two batters. Ashley Langoni followed up with a triple to drive in Heyward. A wild pitch by junior Jenna Caira allowed Langoni to make it home. Junior Stephanie Watts connected with fellow classmate Kelly Saco at first base to end the inning with the Tigers leading 2-0.
LSU defense retired three consecutive batters to send the Orange back into the field. Caira walked one batter, but did not allow a hit to hold LSU scoreless in the top of the second.
Senior Rachel Helman laid down a successul bunt to reach first base with two outs in the bottom of the second. LSU Brittany Mack struck out Caira for the third out to strand Helman on base.
Caira faced just four batters in the top of the third. LSU's Langoni recorded her second hit of the game to reach first, but shortstop Morgan Nandin and Saco connected for the third out to leave Langoni one base. Mack registered two strikeouts in the bottom half of the inning to help LSU retire three straight batters.
In the bottom of the fourth, juniors Lisaira Daniels and Lacey Kohl started the inning with back-to-back singles. Saco was tagged out on an infield hit, but advanced L. Daniels and Kohl to second and third. Freshman Shirley Daniels entered the game to pinch run for Kohl, but Helman popped up to LSU's shortstop to record the third out of the inning and leave two runners on base.
With one runner on base for the Tigers in the top of the fifth, Langoni stepped to the plate and cracked a two-run homerun over the left field fence to increase LSU's lead to 4-0.
Mack fanned three consecutive SU batters in the bottom of the fifth to send Caira and the Orange defense back to work.
In the top of the sixth, LSU's catcher Morgan Russell and second baseman Cassie Trosclair hit consecutive singles to put runners on first and second. Russell and Trosclair advanced on a sacrifice hit. Heyward recorded an RBI single, sending Trosclair home. The Orange's defense held two runners on base with Caira and Saco connecting for the third out.
SU went three up-three down in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore Stacy Kuwik entered the game in the circle for the Orange in the top of the seventh. The righty fanned LSU's first two batters, including Langoni who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate prior to striking out. Third baseman Hallie Gibbs made the cross-field throw to Saco to end the inning.
In Syracuse's last at bat, Gibbs dropped a hit between the second baseman and centerfielder for a base hit. Sophomore Emily Thompson pinch ran for Gibbs at first. Helman reached first on a fielder's choice and Thompson was thrown out at second. Mack recorded her 11th strikeout of the matchup to end the game with a score of 5-0.
Langoni led the Tigers going 3-for-4 at the plate, including a single, triple and a two-run homer.
“We fought the whole game and never gave up. We tried to adjust and I think that's the type of character that our team has,” said Caira.
“This is one more step for us as a team. We got a little bit further than we did last year,” said head coach Leigh Ross.
“We have a lot of experience coming back next year and I think they can use this to their advantage in the future.”
