SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Eight Syracuse players were rewarded with All-America honors by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) on Thursday, May 26. The Orange's eight All-America selections matched Maryland for the most of any Division I school.
Seniors Joel White, John Lade and John Galloway highlighted the group by being named to the first team for the second consecutive season.
In addition to SU's trio of first-team selections, seniors Stephen Keogh and Jovan Miller earned second-team honors, and senior Jeremy Thompson was named to the third team. The honorable mention category featured senior Josh Amidon and sophomore JoJo Marasco.
Syracuse ranks third nationally in scoring defense (6.70) and that effort was recognized by the USILA as White (long-stick midfield), Lade (close defense) and Galloway (goalie) earned top billing. The trio contributed to a unit that held 13 of its 17 opponents to less than 10 goals and posted an overall goals-against average of less than 8.0 for the fourth straight year.
White and Galloway are both finalists for the Tewaaraton Award as the national player of the year. White led the Orange in ground balls (79), while tallying four goals and two assists. It's his third consecutive All-America nod after earning honorable mention plaudits in 2009 and first-team honors in 2010.
The two-time reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, Galloway is the NCAA career leader in wins (59) and minutes played (3,776). He recorded 147 saves, a.572 save percentage and broke his own school record with a 6.70 season goals-against average in 2011.
Lade appeared in 15 games in 2011 and ranked third on the team with 22 caused turnovers. He also collected 29 ground balls while usually marking the opposing team's top attackman. Among Lade's impressive feats this season was holding Siena's Bryan Neufeld scoreless during the NCAA Tournament, ending Neufeld's nation-leading 52-game point streak. In addition, he shut out Johns Hopkins attackman Chris Boland in a 5-4 double-overtime victory against the Blue Jays.
Keogh received second-team recognition after earning honorable mention status the past two years. The 2011 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year, Keogh led the Orange in goals (33) and tied for the team lead in points (41). He finished his career ninth in Syracuse history with 133 goals.
A third-team All-American in 2010, Miller garnered second-team honors in 2011 after recording 14 goals and 11 assists. His best game of the year was a four-point (2g, 2a) performance against Duke that helped the Orange to a 13-11 victory over the Blue Devils.
Thompson was Syracuse's highest scoring midfielder this season with 30 points (18g, 12a). He also led the Orange with 61 faceoff wins.
Amidon earned honorable mention honors for the consecutive season. He tallied 16 goals and 12 assists for a total of 28 points in 2011. Against Cornell, Amidon tied his career high with five points (3g, 2a) playing a part in five of SU's six goals against the Big Red.
In his first year as a starter, Marasco tied Keogh for the team points lead (41) on 23 goals and 18 assists.
Syracuse finished the year with a 15-2 overall record and claimed its second straight BIG EAST regular-season title. In addition, the Orange reached the NCAA quarterfinals for the 29th time before losing to Maryland, 6-5, in overtime.
