Helman Earns Academic Honors

SYRACUSE – Syracuse University senior softball student-athlete Rachel Helman was named to the Capital One Academic All-District I Softball First Team and will now be included on the Academic All-America national ballot.
Helman, a dual major in recording & allied entertainment industries is making her first appearance on the All-District First Team. The outfielder has played in 48 games with 44 starts. She is hitting .298 with 37 hits, 22 runs, 10 rbi and seven doubles. Helman is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic and six-time Athletic Director Honor Roll honoree.
Helman and the rest of the Orange wrap up the 2011 regular season with a three-game series against BIG EAST-rival Louisville this weekend at the SU Softball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday. Live video of Saturday's contests will be available on SUAthletics.com via Orange All Access, as well live audio of Sunday's game. CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs. The nominee must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergraduate and graduate work. He/she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
