SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Utility player Shanelle Harrell will join the Syracuse University softball team for the 2011-12 season, head coach Leigh Ross announced today. Harrell, a native of Irvine, Calif. is currently a high school senior at Beckman High School.
Harrell will join her sister, utility player Jasmine Watson, as a member of the Orange. Softball runs in the family as their older sister, Jasmin Harrell, is a pitcher at Virginia Tech. Shanelle will contribute to the squad as a pitcher and outfielder.
"Shanelle will bring speed and an immediate offensive impact to our team," said Ross.
"I think it's neat that she will get the opportunity to play with her sister. She has played on some great teams and had a tremendous amount of success. I look forward to her joining our program as it continues to grow."
The three-time All-League First Team member led her team in homeruns (13), RBI (30) and batting average (.440) during her senior year. She was named to the Ryan Lemmon all-star team in her senior season and was an all-city selection in 2010. As a pitcher she guided her team to the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division II Pacific Coast League playoffs during her junior and senior years.
Most recently, Harrell played travel softball for head coach Blair Ota and the Irvine Sting. She was a three-time principal's honor roll member.
