SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange softball team (16-17, 3-10) is set to face Notre Dame (17-26, 6-12) in a three-game ACC series at Skytop Softball Stadium from April 17-19. Â
ORANGE UPDATE
The Orange welcome Notre Dame after shutting out Colgate in both games of a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, April 15. Julianna Verni nearly threw a no-hitter in the second game, as Madison Knight tossed a complete game in the first and hit a home run later in the second game.Â
Syracuse won two out of a three-game series against Boston College on the road last weekend, claiming a 4-1 victory on Friday, a 6-4 win in nine innings on Saturday and falling to the Eagles 7-6 on Sunday. The team currently stands in 13th place in the conference headed into the series this weekend.
The Orange started out strong on Friday, with Julianna Verni setting a career high of 13 strikeouts. At the plate, Madison Knight recorded her ninth home run of the season, the three-run homer gave Syracuse the victory. Gabby Lantier also recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the season. In the field, Grace Weaver totaled a career-high of 14 putouts.
On Saturday, 'Cuse battled into an extra two innings before securing the victory. Kaylee Eubanks' double in the top of the ninth inning was the first multi-base hit of her career and put her in scoring position. Rose Cano pinch hit and singled to bring in a run before Jadyn Burney singled to right field.
Vanessa Flores, Madison Knight and Lauren Fox all had multi-hit games on Sunday's series finale. Peyton Schemmer's double at the top of the fifth inning was her first hit this season.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH
Notre Dame enters the weekend with a 17-26 overall record and a 6-12 conference record. The Irish faced Indiana in a mid-week matchup, falling 11-1 to the Hoosiers in five innings. Last weekend, Notre Dame hosted Louisville, winning only the first of three-game series.
Sophomore Brianne Weiss threw her second complete game of the season, striking out seven in seven innings.
The team had five freshmen named to Softball America Freshman Watch List – Molly Conner, Lily Hagan, Hayden Kyne, Jillian Torres, and Ava Zachary, who was also named to D1 Softball D100 Freshman to Watch list.
The Irish currently stand in 12th place in the ACC. The team was picked to finish in 11th place, according to the ACC Preseason Poll.
Last season, Notre Dame finished with a 23-31-1 overall record and placed 11th in the ACC. The Irish lost to North Carolina in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
