SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse is ranked 44th in the Capital One Cup standings on the list of 67 NCAA Division I institutions that have earned points. Head coach John Desko and the Orange men's lacrosse team registered 12 points after advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
The Capital One Cup is awarded annually to each of the top men's and women's Division I college athletics programs in the country. Schools earn points toward the Capital One Cup for top 10 finishes in NCAA Championships and final official coaches' polls. Points are totaled separately for men and women's sports, with the top 10 finishers for each receiving an award.
The Orange men's lacrosse team closed the season with a 15-2 overall record and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the 29th time in program history. In addition, Syracuse won its second straight BIG EAST title with a perfect 6-0 record in conference play. During the course of the year, the Orange defeated nine ranked opponents, including the nation's No. 1 team twice in Virginia and Notre Dame. Its 14 regular-season wins were the most for the program since 1949.
Syracuse's women's teams currently rank 39th out of 58 schools with six total points. Head coach Ange Bradley and the SU field hockey squad garnered five points for advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championship. The fourth-ranked Orange advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Championship, where the 2010 BIG EAST Champions advanced to the second round of the tournament.
Under the guidance of head coach Chris Fox, the women's cross country team earned a program best 10th-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championships to score one point toward the standings. After capturing its second consecutive Northeast Region Championship, the Orange went on to record its first top 10 performance in program history.
