Syracuse football defensive end Chandler Jones is the most recent member of an already extensive list of Orange players earning preseason accolades. The SU senior is on the 125 member Official Watch List for the 2011 Rotary Lombardi Award, which honors the nation's college lineman of the year.
Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award, a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NFCAA), is limited to down offensive or defensive linemen who set up no farther than ten yards to the left or right of the ball, and linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. Candidates claim a place on the Watch List by earning All-American or first team All-Conference honors from the previous season or by being projected as an All-American or first team All-Conference member for the upcoming season. The nominations committee may also approve a student-athlete's addition to the Watch List.
Jones, one of ten BIG EAST student-athletes on this year's Watch List, returns to the Orange as the team's returning sack leader from the 2010 season. The Endicott, N.Y. native started all 13 games last season, finishing with four sacks for a loss of 29 yards which ranked 14th amongst all BIG EAST defenders. His 57 total tackles, including 9.5 tackles for loss, and a team-high three forced fumbles earned Jones All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. Jones eclipsed 100 career tackles in 2010, and now has 109 total tackles along with 5.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss in two years on the field at SU.
Former Syracuse student-athletes named as Finalists for the Lombardi Award include Dwight Freeney (2001), Ted Gregory (1987) and Tim Green (1985).
The Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List will be updated and revised until the first round of voting to determine the 12 Semifinalists for 2011. The Selection Committee comprises over 500 members, including all past winners, finalists, Division IA head coaches and a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. The 42nd Rotary Lombardi Award winner will be announced on December 7 following a two-day event in Houston, Texas.
