SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A member of the 1987 Final Four team, Herman Harried has dedicated himself to teaching the game of basketball.
Harried spent last week at the Carmelo Anthony Basketball Practice Facility as a coach at Jim Boeheim's Fantasy Camp.
What are you up to these days?
"I am back in Baltimore. I coach at Lake Clifton High School. I started out teaching and coaching; now I am the coach and the Athletics Director. This will be my 15th year at the school. Over the years there, we have won three state championships, four city championships and six regional championships. Some guys I have coached include Antonio Barton who is going to be a sophomore at Memphis, Josh Shelby who was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies and who played at Kansas, and also Cleveland Melvin who plays at DePaul and was named the Big East Rookie of the Year. I also just had a young man sign at the University of Wyoming.
"I have been doing USA Basketball the last few summers as well. The summer before last, we won the gold medal in Argentina and last summer we won the world championships in Hamburg, Germany. I do a lot of skills instruction camps with Nike. I coach at the Jordan Brand Classic every year, so I'm pretty busy."
How is it being back here with all the other SU greats?
"It's great being back. I think it gives people a chance to see that Syracuse basketball is a fraternity for life. You can see the former players from various years and how we all get along with each other. We are just one big Syracuse basketball family. Billy Owens – he lives in Philadelphia and I live in Baltimore – he comes to Baltimore a lot and I go to Philadelphia a lot. He supports my basketball program. I keep in contact with Derrick Coleman too. It's just one big happy family. It doesn't get better than this. It shows how dedicated everyone is to Syracuse basketball."
What things did you learn from Coach Boeheim that you are passing along to your players?
"As a coach, I play man defense. But when I play zone – I play the Syracuse zone. I appreciate learning that from him. Coach Boeheim allowed people to be themselves. He allowed you to grow as a man, so I try to do the same thing with my kids."
Can you describe your favorite memory as a player?
"One of my favorite memories was when we beat North Carolina in the Meadowlands to reach the Final Four. The year after that we went to the sweet 16 and we beat Colorado State who – at the time – had the nation's leading scorer. Derrick Coleman's back was hurting so I ended up playing a lot that game and held him to two points that night. That was one of my best memories."Naithan George postgame at Louisville
