Calling all Orange football fans – 2011 Fanfest is Friday, August 12. Head coach Doug Marrone and the Syracuse team are ready to reunite in preparation for the upcoming season.
"I love our fans," Marrone said. "I'm excited for them to come here and to put a smile on their face. I think our players will be very appreciative of it, as well as our coaches and administration. In this community, it's their team and it's our team, and I do get excited about that."
Gates open at 3:00 p.m. and football practice will be held from 3:45-6:30 p.m., followed by an autograph session from the student-athletes. Admission is free and complimentary parking is available in the Manley Field House lots.
Fanfest will be held at the Les Vielbig Track (next to Coyne Field and the Schwartzwalder and Katz football practice fields).
Syracuse Athletics corporate partners Tops Supermarkets and Dunkin Donuts will be set up and handing out promotional items and product samples.
There will be an athletics marketing tent set up with 2011 football posters and schedule cards. Pro Football Hall of Fame member and former Syracuse University standout Floyd Little will be on hand to meet and greet Orange fans. A number of kid-friendly activities, including a bounce house, obstacle course and fun house, are also planned. The band “Classified” will perform live.
The ticket office will be set up at Fanfest with information on the 2011 season, including the available ticket packages.
Syracuse's Olympic sport teams will also be on hand to mingle with the fans. There will be scrimmages, practices and meet and greet opportunities with the men's and women's soccer teams, the women's field hockey team, the women's volleyball team and the women's basketball team.
On the field fans can expect to see a team that is ahead of where it has been in terms of installation of the playbook one week into preseason camp, according to Marrone.
"If you had a graph, you can point and say 'Here I am practice one, I made a little improvement practice two, stayed the same practice three,' Marrone said gesturing to indicate growth. "But at the end of the day when you draw that line, that line is in an upward slope. What you don't want to have is the ups and the downs and those flows that we're talking about. We explain this to the players."
SU kicks off the 2011 season on Thursday, September 1 against Wake Forest in the Carrier Dome (8:00 p.m., ESPN3). Individual and season tickets are available online and at the Dome Box Office (1-888-DOME-TIX).
Camp Notes
Head coach Doug Marrone announced on Thursday that strong safety Shamarko Thomas and offensive linemen Nick Robinson and Ian Allport will be out of activity until further notice due to concussions sustained on August 10.
Thomas, a junior from Virginia Beach, Va., played in all 13 games, including eight starts, as a sophomore in 2010 and recorded 67 tackles. A senior from Pulaski, N.Y., Allport, who was listed as the second-string center on the preseason depth chart, played in three games in 2010. Robinson is a freshman offensive tackle from Liverpool, N.Y.
