More than 1,000 fans turned out to catch their first glimpse of the 2011 Orange squad on Friday as head coach Doug Marrone and his team hosted Fanfest on the Katz-Schwartzwalder practice fields.
"We truly appreciate the support," Marrone said over the microphone after practice. "I thank (the fans) for showing up today, and we're going to put a great team out there for you this year."
Fans had the opportunity to watch multiple SU teams in action on Friday and to take part in an autograph session with the student-athletes after their practices and scrimmages.
"It's good to get out early in the season and see (the players)," said season ticket holder Tim Turner. "It's nice to see some of the new guys, as well."
Fans also discussed the expectations for the Orange for the 2011 campaign, which kicks off at the Carrier Dome on September 1 against Wake Forest (8:00 p.m., ESPN3).
"I think they'll do pretty well and be competitive," said SU supporter John Connolly. "I think Doug Marrone is fantastic. The kids are more competitive and are in better shape. They're heading in the right direction."
"I'm excited and looking forward (to this season), added Turner."I like what happened last season and I think they can build on it. Every year it's been better. The team looks like they're focused, they're into it, and they know what they're doing."
SU kicks off the 2011 season on Thursday, September 1 against Wake Forest in the Carrier Dome (8:00 p.m., ESPN3). Individual and season tickets are available online and at the Dome Box Office (1-888-DOME-TIX).
Camp Notes
Sophomore cornerback Keon Lyn and senior offensive guard Jarel Lowrey sustained injuries that will sideline them from practice. Lyn dislocated his right shoulder during practice on August 11 and will be out of activity until further notice. In 2010, Lyn recorded four tackles in nine games, playing primarily on special teams as a true freshman.
Lowery injured his right knee during practice on August 10 and an MRI on August 11 revealed a tear of his posterior cruciate ligament and partial tear of his ACL. As a result of this injury, Lowrey will be out indefinitely.
