The payoff is evident for the 2011 Orange. Head coach Doug Marrone's squad has executed and performed each day during the two-a-day sessions of preseason camp. As the focus shifts to preparations for the season opener against Wake Forest on September 1 in the Carrier Dome (8:00 p.m., ESPN3), the squad has had one of the best weeks of practice since Marrone became head coach three years ago.
"We had a good day," Marrone said. "It was important for us to go out there and have a good day today. We've put together a couple of good days of practice where we've helped ourselves. Monday we had two good practices, Tuesday we had a good practice, Wednesday we had two good practices, and today we had a good practice. We've shown some consistency."
The competition continued throughout the week on the Katz-Schwartzwalder practice fields, as the coaches and student-athletes made daily adjustments and improvements.
"We're in a much better place right now than we were a week ago because this is probably one of the best strings of practices that we've put together since I've been here. I don't think that's any indication of how we're going to play, but it's a great indication of being in a position to play well. And that's important."
SU will practice in the Carrier Dome on Saturday for the annual Ernie Davis scrimmage, which signals the end of preseason camp and the start of regular season preparations. Marrone expects to play all of his student-athletes on Saturday as a final assessment of his team's position with less than two weeks until opening night.
"We're planning on playing everyone so we can get a true evaluation of exactly where we are and start getting prepared for the upcoming season," he said.
SU kicks off the 2011 season on Thursday, September 1 against Wake Forest in the Carrier Dome (8:00 p.m., ESPN3). Individual and season tickets are available online and at the Dome Box Office (1-888-DOME-TIX).
