HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's soccer team (0-0) opens the 2011 regular season on Saturday, Aug. 27 for a match against Central New York rival Colgate (0-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Van Doren Field. The match is the season opener for both teams.
The Orange is coming off a 2-10-5 record in Ian McIntyre's first season as head coach. Colgate was 8-6-5 in 2010 and won the Patriot League regular-season championship with a 5-0-2 mark in league play.
THE ORANGE IN OPENERS
Syracuse is 38-33-5 all-time in season-opening games and has won its first game of the season in four of the past six years. Head coach Ian McIntyre is 7-3-2 all-time in season-openers during his coaching a career.
ROYDHOUSE IS SU'S TOP RETURNING SCORER
Senior midfielder Nick Roydhouse is the team's leading returning scorer and the team captain for the 2011 season. Last season, Roydhouse led the team or was tied for the team lead in every offensive category. Roydhouse recorded 10 points on four goals and two assists.
ORANGE ENJOYS SUCCESSFUL PRESEASON
The Orange fared well in the 2011 preseason, winning both of its exhibition games. SU won the two games by a combined score of 7-0.
In its first exhibition, Syracuse defeated Herkimer County Community College, 4-0, on Friday, Aug. 19 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Senior Dan Summers led the Orange with two goals in his SU debut. Junior Louis Clark and senior #L.J. Papaleo# also had goals in the victory.
SU closed its exhibition schedule at cross-town foe Le Moyne on Monday, Aug. 22. The Orange defeated the Dolphins, 3-0. Summers, for the second consecutive game, tallied two goals. Senior Federico Agreda had the Orange's final tally.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate returns its top three scorers and starting goalkeeper from a team that went 8-6-5 in 2010 and the team has been picked to win the 2011 Patriot League crown in a vote by the league's head coaches and SIDs.
Senior Steven Miller led the team in points (12) and goals (5) and was tied for the lead in assists (2) during his junior season. Senior Matt Schuber finished with 10 points in 2010 on four goals and two assists. Both players earned 2010 All-Patriot League honors. Goalie Chris Miller, the 2010 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, made 55 saves and posted a 0.94 goals against average last season.
Head coach Erik Ronning is 54-37-22 overall in his career. He's guided the Raiders to the Patriot League Tournament in five of his first six seasons. Ronning was named the 2010 Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading the team to Patriot League regular-season championship.
Orange head coach Ian McIntyre will see a familar face on the sideline Saturday. Colgate assistant coach Bill Boyle played with McIntyre at Hartwick from 1994-96.
THE SERIES WITH COLGATE
Saturday's meeting will mark the 63rd time Syracuse and Colgate will face off on the pitch. Syracuse has only played one opponent more in school history, playing Cornell 66 times. The series has been tightly-contested in the last four meetings, with each one of the past four games going to overtime. In 2005 and 2008, the teams played to 1-1 draws. The teams have exchanged overtime victories in their past two matches. Last season, Orange's Mark Brode converted on a free kick from 20 yards out to secure a 3-2 win over the Raiders.

Syracuse will host Canisius in its home opener on Thursday, Sept. 1 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
