Orange Receiving Corps Has Depth

Watch Coach Marrone's Press Conference
The Orange wide receiving corps is as deep as it has been during third-year head coach Doug Maronne's tenure, including five with game experience and four newcomers to the group who are grabbing attention.
"I like them," said Marrone of the young wide receivers. "They're big. I think that's the first thing you notice. They can run and they catch the ball well. Now it's just a matter of who can go over the middle. You really don't know of who can go over the middle and who can catch that ball and hang onto it in the heat of the battle when that defensive back is coming down."
Senior Van Chew, who led the Orange in receptions (41), yards (611) and receiving touchdowns (5) last season, senior Dorian Graham, junior Alec Lemon and sophomore Adrian Flemming are atop the depth chart with sophomore Jarrod West, and freshmen Jeremiah Kobena, Kyle Foster and Keenan Hale battling to earn a spot in the rotation each day. The first-year players are part of the group of 24 newcomers to the program.
"I see these (first-year) kids being very close," Marrone said."In my conversations with them, a couple of the kids have told me, 'Everything's great and everyone's getting along very well.' I'm excited about that. That's an important factor."
Marrone expects the freshman, who will look to replace 22 letterwinners the Orange lost from the 2010 squad, to get involved outside of the football team as part of the SU student body.
"That's a big part of college football," Marrone said "One of our philosophies with the program is that we don't put our arms around our student-athletes and shield them from everyone else. We want our student-athletes to be leaders in the student body. As soon as they come we try to put them right up there on campus with the student body. We encourage them to make friends with people outside of football."
SU kicks off the 2011 season on Thursday, September 1 against Wake Forest in the Carrier Dome (8:00 p.m., ESPN3). Individual and season tickets are available online and at the Dome Box Office (1-888-DOME-TIX).
Camp News
Marrone announced on Sunday that sophomore running back Steve Rene has been released from the hospital following care for his right arm infection and has returned the campus. Rene will remain out of activity for the next 7-10 days.
