Senior Ryan Nassib is entering his second season as the starting signal caller for the Orange and junior Charley Loeb is in his third year in the program. Head coach Doug Marrone is pleased with the way both quarterbacks have absorbed the team's offensive scheme and the impact it has on the rest of the offense.
"When your quarterbacks have knowledge of the full system, then it is kind of like everyone else has to catch up," Marrone said. "You want your offense to catch up to your quarterback, not your quarterback catching up to your offense."
Nassib completed a school record 202 passes for 2,334 yards and 19 touchdowns last season for SU in his first year running the offense. Loeb will serve as the backup for Nassib for the second year.
"Experience is key in this game," said junior wide receiver Alec Lemon. "If you want to be on the field, you have to know how things run. We already know the plays, and we are just advancing on what we already know about them."
Protecting Nassib is an offensive line that returns four starters from last season's 8-5 New Era Pinstripe Bowl Championship squad. Michael Hay, Andrew Tiller, Justin Pugh and Zack Chibane will look to use their experience and increase their speed off the snap against opposing defenses.
"With these developing defenses, you need offenses that are able to move their feet," Chibane said. "I like to take pride in the fact that our offensive line can move, and we worked on that in the off-season a lot."
Joining the offensive line is sophomore center Macky MacPherson, who saw time as SU's short-snapper last season, will start in place of the graduated Ryan Bartholomew, who is currently in training camp with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.
"We built the chemistry last year and now we're just building onto it," added senior offensive guard Andrew Tiller. "We're going to go out here and get right to it, and we are hoping we can take advantage of that over other teams."
SU kicks off the 2011 season on Thursday, September 1 against Wake Forest in the Carrier Dome (8:00 p.m., ESPN3). Individual and season tickets are available online and at the Dome Box Office (1-888-DOME-TIX). Fans are invited to the annual Fanfest on Friday, August 12 at 3:00 p.m. on the Katz-Schwartzwalder practice fields behind Manley Field House.
