Former Syracuse football standouts Will Allen and Tony Fiammetta are back in the National Football League (NFL), becoming the 15th and 16th Orange alumni on current NFL rosters. Allen signed with the Miami Dolphins while Fiammetta was signed by the Dallas Cowboys. Both players are expected to be on the field with their teams at practice on Wednesday.
Allen rejoins the Dolphins are being cut last week, and will replace nickel back Benny Sapp, whose contract was terminated on Tuesday. Allen, a 10-year veteran, will look to aid a Miami defense that allowed 517 passing yards to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in the team's season opener. Allen, who was with the Miami franchise from 2006-09, started 53 games for the Dolphins during his tenure, and also spent five seasons with the New York Giants from 2001-06 after being drafted 22nd overall in the 2001 NFL Draft.
Fiammetta was released by Carolina after two seasons with the franchise, where he played in 24 games and earned 11 starts. He becomes the only true fullback on the Dallas roster, and is expected to contribute on special teams in the Cowboys' game against San Francisco this weekend. Fiammetta was a 4th round draft pick by Carolina in 2009.
SU travels to USC this weekend for the first time since 1924 on Saturday evening (8:00 p.m., FX Network), and will return to the Carrier Dome on September 24 to host Toledo (12:00 p.m., BIG EAST Network). Individual and season tickets are available for the game online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) and by phone (888-DOMETIX). Season tickets start at $99, while the Time Warner Triple Play Pack, which offers one ticket to any three home games, starts at $72.
