Selected as one of the best and brightest from the college gridiron, Syracuse redshirt-senior cornerback Kevyn Scott is one of 127 candidates for the 2011 National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity Investments.
Nominated by their schools, candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Scott (Tamarac, Fla.) has started all four games for the Orange this season, and is tied for third in the BIG EAST with two interceptions. Both of Scott's interceptions have come either in the fourth quarter or overtime. He has also contributed 13 tackles in 2011, including 10 solo.
Scott is pursuing a master's degree in information management after receiving his bachelor's degree in information management and technology. A 2008-09 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars First-Team selection, he was invited to attend the 2009 University Presidential Inaugural Conference (UPIC), including the inauguration of President Barack Obama, in Washington, D.C., as a member of the National Honor Society. Scott is also a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team member and six-time Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll selection.
Scott can become the fifth SU student-athlete to earn a NFF Scholar-Athlete distinction, joining Gerhard Schwedes (1959), Tony Romano (1983), Tim Green (1985) and Mark Baniewicz (1999).
The 127 nominees also comprise the list of semifinalists for the 2011 William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation.
The NFF Awards Committee will select up to 16 scholar-athletes, and the results will be announced on Wednesday, October 26. Each recipient will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, and will vie as finalists for the 2011 William V. Campbell Trophy. The group will be honored on December 6 during the 54th NFF Annual Awards Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria, where one member will be announced as the winner of the Campbell Trophy.
The Orange (3-1) open the BIG EAST portion of its schedule against Rutgers this Saturday, October 1 (12:00 p.m., BIG EAST Network). Tickets are available for the game online, at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B) and by phone (888-DOMETIX).
