KINGSTON, R.I. -- Sophomore Cecelia Borgstrom scored her first career goal in the Syracuse women's soccer team's 2-1 setback against Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I. on Sunday, Sept. 4. The loss snapped the Orange's two-game unbeaten streak.
Syracuse (1-2-1) controlled possession for the majority of the first half and outshot the Rams (3-0-1), 7-4, in the first 45 minutes of action. Rhode Island netted the first goal of the game on a free kick that was played into the box from 40 yards out. Dariann Sellitti received the pass and headed the ball into the back of the goal to give Rhode Island a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. The Rams took a 2-0 lead off another free kick in the 44th minute. The ball was played into box where it was deflected to Stephanie Santos. Santos headed the ball into the net for her team-leading third goal of the season.
The Orange answered 13 seconds later. Syracuse played the ball through the middle of the field and Borgstrom finished off the play with her first career goal to cut the lead in half.
In the second half, Syracuse continued to control possession and produced several scoring opportunities, but it couldn't find the back of the net for the equalizer as the Orange suffered its second one-goal loss of the season.
“We controlled possession in both halves,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We were sloppy at times with our passing and we got stretched out at times. But we dominated every facet of the game except on the scoreboard. Rhode Island scored both of their goals off free kicks. Our marking in the box was not very good. We had two lapses in concentration and it cost us two goals. After the second goal, we answered immediately. We had great movement through the middle of the field, which demonstrated how well we can play at times. We have to be more consistent with our play.”
Syracuse outshot Rhode Island, 12-6, and earned two corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Anghel made four saves for Syracuse, while Rams' goalkeeper Ashley Davis finished with six saves.
The Orange will play at the Fairfield University 20th Anniversary Invitational where it will face the host Stags on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
