Syracuse's victory against Pittsburgh on Monday night gave the #1/1 undefeated Orange its 20th win, and its best start in school history, surpassing the previous record of 19-0.
The last time the Orange began a season 19-0 was the 1999-00 campaign. That squad (led by Jason Hart and Etan Thomas) won its first 19 before dropping a home date with Seton Hall. They went on to finish 26-6, losing in the Sweet-16 to eventual NCAA Champion Michigan State.
Syracuse has had many hot starts over the course of Coach Jim Boeheim's 36 years. Since 1976, the Orange has started 15-0 four different times. Boeheim's teams typically pass the 20-win mark each season. In his 36 years, the Orange has earned 20 victories 34 times, an NCAA record.
This season marks the first time that Boeheim and the Orange have achieved 20 wins without a loss. The Orange are outscoring their opponents by an average of 20.2 points per game and are scoring a BIG EAST leading 80 points per game. .
In addition to setting its own school record, the Orange also moved one step closer to breaking the all-time BIG EAST record for wins to begin a season, held by Boston College, who began the year 20-0 in 2004-05.
When Syracuse takes the floor in South Bend on Saturday night (6:00 p.m., ESPN) against Notre Dame, it will be playing to extend the school, and to set the BIG EAST record for best start to a men's basketball season ever.
