Three Syracuse men's crew alumni are currently at USRowing Training Centers as they prepare to make attempts at the 2012 Olympic Games. Martin Etem '09, Mike Gennaro '11 and Justin Stangel '07 are all training to make runs to represent the Red, White and Blue in London this summer.
Etem, Gennaro and Stangel are looking to join the ranks of 11 Olympians and five coaches produced by the Syracuse rowing program over the years. They are also seeking to continue the streak of the Orange being represented by a coach, rower, or alternate at every Olympics since 1964.
“It's a really good sign for a program when you can send athletes along to the National Team Training Centers,” Syracuse Head Coach Dave Reischman said. “All of our athletes and alumni follow their results quite carefully and take a lot of pride that we were a small part in their development.”
Etem is currently training at the USRowing Training Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. The 2009 SU alum is working with the Olympic double hopefuls after training with the US Development squad, also in Oklahoma City.
“My current training is going well,” Etem said. “We are in the process of selecting partners right now. There is a lot of stress, but hopefully all of our hard work right now will pay off in the coming months and into the summer.”
Etem was a member of the US U-23 quad boat in 2009 before going on to finish second in the same event at the 2010 US National Team Trials.
Etem, a Long Beach, Calif. native, graduated in 2009 after a successful collegiate career in which he helped lead the Orange in capturing the Conlan Cup, Goes Trophy, Packard Cup and Ten Eyck Cup.
“Syracuse is the reason I am still rowing,” Etem said. “The school and more importantly, Dave Reischman, have been great positive influences on me.”
The U.S. double will be chosen at the National Selection Regatta II on April 9-12 in Chula Vista, Calif. From there, he and his partner must compete at the Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland on May 20-23 to earn a spot.
Gennaro is presently training at the California Rowing Club in Oakland, Calif. with the US men's 8+ hopefuls under USRowing assistant coach and Cal head coach Mike Teti.
“All of our workouts are strenuous both physically and mentally,” Gennaro said. “The best way to handle things is by taking everything one practice at a time. Every practice I try to improve on my rowing technically.”
A 2011 SU alum, Gennaro has won five total international medals in the last three summers. He is a three-time medalist at the U-23 World Championships, including one gold, and won two golds at the Pan-American Games in the pair and 8+. He sat in the stroke seat for the U.S.'s gold medal-winning men's 8+ at the 2011 U-23 World's in Amsterdam, Netherlands, a boat selected by Teti.
The Havertown, Pa. native sat in the stroke seat for the SU 8+ for three seasons, leading the Orange to a Grand Final appearance at the IRA in 2010.
“SU taught me a lot about myself, and I like to think I did a lot of growing up over my four years at Syracuse,” Gennaro said. “There were a lot of influential people on campus that helped me understand what it takes to get to the next level. Two of my biggest mentors were Coach Dave Reischman and Head Athletic Trainer Brad Pike.”
The U.S. men's eight will be selected by Teti and the USRowing staff prior to the Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland on May 20-23, 2012.
Stangel is also currently at the California Rowing Club in Oakland, Calif. with the US men's eight hopefuls under Coach Teti after previously training at the USRowing Training Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. A member of the last two U.S. Senior National Teams, the 2007 Syracuse grad placed ninth in at the 2011 World Championships in the pair, and could try to make London in that event if he does not make the eight crew.
“Since September, I have been recovering from a back injury,” Stangel said. “But now that I am here and in a groove, I am just working hard to help make the fastest 8+ possible. There has been a lot of hard work and improvement every day, even though I have just arrived.”
After the 8+ team is selected by Teti and the USRowing coaches, the U.S. pair will be decided at the National Selection Regatta I on March 15-17 in Chula Vista, Calif.
Stangel, a Madison, Wis. native, helped lead SU to capturing the Goes Trophy, Packard Cup, Ten Eyck Cup and Conlan Cup in his senior season of 2007, completing three undefeated cup seasons for his class.
“I would not have been able to accomplish any of this without the help and support of the Syracuse Family,” Stangel said. “In 2010, I had to raise money to go to the World Championships. Some of the highest amounts donated to my cause were from Syracuse alumni.”
“The best part is they are all great kids who contributed a great deal to the University and left our program a better place,” Reischman said. “They represent us really well.”
