The Syracuse football program has a prodigious history of producing NFL Pro Bowl players. Defensive end Dwight Freeney, a 10-year NFL veteran with the Indianapolis Colts, will continue the run this weekend in the 2012 Pro Bowl (Sunday, January 29 at 7:00 pm, NBC). Freeney, who recorded 8.5 sacks this season, will play in his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl and the seventh in his NFL career.
The Syracuse Pro Bowl story began in 1958 when running back Jim Brown and center Jim Ringo each earned the honor. Brown played nine NFL seasons and made the Pro Bowl squad each time. Ringo was elected to the Pro Bowl 10 times in his 15-year career, including nine consecutive invites.
After Brown and Ringo paved the Orange road to the Pro Bowl the Syracuse streak continued with the likes of Walt Sweeney (San Diego Chargers guard) and NFL Hall of Famers John Mackey (Baltimore Colts tight end), Floyd Little (Denver Broncos running back), and Larry Csonka (Miami Dolphins running back).
Overall, former Syracuse players have accounted for a total of 92 Pro Bowl appearances, exceeding the amount produced by several other renowned football programs, including Georgia (87), Florida State (73), and Florida (57).
And while the history is impressive, the Orange streak in the NFL's annual all-star game continues today. Since 1979, former Syracuse Orange players have garnered 45 Pro Bowl invitations.
Since 2000, three former Orange standouts have accounted for a total of 23 Pro Bowls, including Marvin Harrison (nine), Donovan McNabb (seven) and Freeney (seven).
